St. John’s Drops Contest Against Iona, 5-3

Amy Mallah and London Jarrard record home runs during home loss
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 20, 2022) – The St. John's softball team fell to Iona, 5-3, in a midweek contest at Red Storm Field on Wednesday afternoon.
London Jarrard went 1-for-3 at the plate as the freshman nailed a two-run homer. The blast marked Jarrard's first collegiate home run. Amy Mallah went 2-for-3 as the East Meadow, N.Y., native tallied her second homer of the year.
Meisha Murray and Anese Thompson both added in a hit, extending their hitting streaks to three games, while Natalie Alheidt scored one run.
Carolina Zamudio fell to 4-13 on the season. The freshman allowed four hits, two earned runs and tallied seven punchouts for the Red Storm (10-31).
Samantha Reib moved to 6-4 on the season as she earned the win for the visiting Gaels (18-16) The sophomore pitched 1.2 innings of one-hit, one-run work while starter Kara Zazzaro put in 5.1 innings of four-hit, two-run work and fanned seven batters.
Iona struck early as Allie Taylor reached third on an error by the right fielder. Zamudio retired the next two batters before Reigning MAAC Player of the Year Jessica Chilcott singled to right field to score the first run of the afternoon.
The Gaels offense continued to dominate as the visitors used two hits to score two runs in the second inning. Taylor posted a two-out triple with runners on first and second, giving Iona the 3-0 edge.
Both Zamudio and Zazzaro battled back-and-forth, holding each team scoreless until the bottom of the sixth. Alheidt got the home half of the frame started with a leadoff walk before Jarrard slammed her two-run homer to right field. With two outs, Mallah sent a dinger to the same spot to knot the game at three.
With one out in the top of the seventh, Zamudio walked two batters before she struck out Chilcott for the second out of the inning. Kayla Haywood followed as she reached on an error by the Johnnies defense, allowing the two base runners to score and giving Iona the 5-3 advantage
Zamudio struck out the final batter, but the damage was done as the Red Storm looked to rally in the seventh. Using just seven pitches, Reib took down the Red Storm batters to finish the game.
St. John's will return to action on April 27 when it travels to Fordham for a midweek tilt. First pitch from Bahoshy Softball Complex is slated for 7 p.m.
