Hannah Mearns records second collegiate shut-out
WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 29, 2022) – Hannah Mearns pitched her second collegiate shut-out as the St. John's softball team defeated Georgetown, 2-0, on Friday afternoon at the Nationals Youth Academy.
Mearns moved to 4-15 on the season as the sophomore allowed just three hits while tallying five punchouts to keep the Hoyas (13-26, 3-14 BIG EAST) scoreless.
London Jarrard went 2-for-3 with two RBIs as the freshman tallied her 11th double of the season. Meisha Murray extended her hitting streak to four games as the senior went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored.
Georgetown pitcher Julia Parker fell to 4-14 with the loss as she gave up five hits and two runs while fanning six batters.
After two scoreless innings on both sides, St. John's (11-31, 5-14 BIG EAST) rallied in the third inning, beginning with Natalie Alheidt earning a base on balls before stealing second. The junior advanced to third when Murray singled to put runners on the corners. Jarrard grounded out to second on the next at bat, but to scored Alheidt to break up the scoreless stalemate.
Georgetown loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame with a double and a pair of walks, but the Red Storm defense kept the Hoyas from crossing home plate as a groundout to Jarrard ended the home team's at-bat.
A scoreless fourth inning followed for both teams, but with two outs in the top of the fifth, Murray recorded her first collegiate triple as the senior sent the ball to right center field. Jarrard followed the senior with a double to right field, scoring Murray and giving St. John's the 2-0 edge.
Looking to maintain the advantage, Mearns battled in the circle, retiring nine of the 12 batters she faced to close the game. A pop out by Hoya third baseman Kiki Besnard sealed the St. John's victory and Mearn's 10th complete game this year.
St. John's will rematch Georgetown at the Nationals Youth Academy on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed at GUHoyas.com
