Red Storm defeat Butler, 4-1, in Saturday’s semifinal
CAYCE, S.C.- For the third consecutive BIG EAST tournament, the St. John's men's tennis team has reached the championship match. The Red Storm defeated Butler in the semifinal round from the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.
Sunday's final will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports. In a rematch of last year's title match, DePaul awaits in the final. The Blue Demons edged the Red Storm in last year's championship tilt, 4-3.
In doubles competition, Axel Vila Antuna and Ignacio Garcia held court, as they have all season in the top-slot for the Red Storm. After falling on the no. 2 court, the Johnnies had their backs against the wall as Vlad Vasilache and Carl Gustavsson trailed in the rubber match, 4-2. The freshman pairing orchestrated a rally and clinched the point after a 7-6 tiebreaker victory over the Bulldogs Ryan Roegner and Zach Trimpe.
For the second straight day, it was the Johnnies no. 4-6 courts that tallied the singles victories in consecutive sets to propel them to the final round.
Vasilache logged his 13th singles win on the season on Saturday morning. The freshman defeated Drew Michael, 6-2, 6-2.
Ryota Kaneda notched the win to send the Red Storm to the finals in a 6-2, 6-2, over the Bulldogs Michael Karr.
On the no. 4 court, Garcia swept Butler's Patrick Joss, 6-2, 6-1 for the match-clinching victory.
Sunday's title match with second-seeded DePaul is slated to begin at 9 a.m.
