Vincent Bianchi threw 4.1 hitless innings on Saturday
PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa.- A four-run fourth inning proved costly as the St. John's baseball team fell to Villanova, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth.
In his eighth start of the season, David Williams went 2-for-3 with a walk, the first multi-hit outing for the redshirt junior in 2022.
Colin Wetterau and Jackson Tucker each recorded base hit on Saturday while four other Johnnies drew a walk against Villanova pitching.
Vincent Bianchi put together his best outing of the season out of the bullpen, tossing 4.1 hitless innings with a strikeout. The redshirt sophomore righthander faced only two batters over the minimum in a career-long appearance. Bianchi has not allowed more than one run in any outing since April 2. Brandon Backman was tagged with the loss for St. John's (16-26-1, 2-8-1 BIG EAST)
It was a pitcher's duel early as both starters worked three scoreless innings to open the afternoon. Backman ran into some trouble in the bottom half of the fourth when the Wildcats (17-20-1, 7-7) loaded the bases with no outs. A ground-rule double and a two-RBI single gave the home side an early 4-0 advantage after four frames.
Three straight hitters reached base to start the top of the fifth for St. John's, but the Wildcats were able to work out of the jam to preserve their four-run lead.
The Johnnies got at least one runner on in each of the next three frames, but Villanova pitching held firm and kept the Red Storm off the scoreboard heading into the ninth inning.
In the top of the ninth, St. John's used two walks and an error to load the bases with one out in the frame, knocking Villanova starter Tyler Arella out of the contest in the process. Devin Rivera came in from the bullpen and induced a groundball double play to end the Red Storm comeback attempt and clinch the series.
The Johnnies and Wildcats will conclude the three-game series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch from Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth is set for noon.
