Huber ties the single-season goal record after a hat-trick on Saturday
QUEENS, N.Y- The St. John's lacrosse team fell in its regular-season finale to Providence, 20-14, on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
In an offensive flurry that was highly-contested in the first half, the Friars utilized a third quarter run to separate themselves from St. John's (2-12, 0-5) at DaSilva Memorial Field.
Jonathan Huber scored three goals to tie the program's single-season scoring record with 40 goals on the year. The attackman now joins Kieran McArdle (2014) and Stefan Diachenko (2015) as the only player in St. John's lacrosse history to fire in 40 tallies in a single season.
Patrick Ednie notched a career-high of five points (3 G, 2 A) on his Senior Day to lead the Johnnies. Brian Kelly, Dylan Willis and Caleb Zuhoski each contributed a pair of goals in the losing effort.
The Red Storm struck first after Huber added his first of the day on a feed from Kelly. With the assist and first of his three points on the day, Kelly surpassed Kevin Cernuto's mark in 2011 for the most points in a single-season by a St. John's freshman. The rookie attackman concluded his first campaign with 44 points (24 G, 20 A) on the year.
The two conference foes battled back-and-forth in an opening quarter that saw three ties and four lead changes.
A five-goal run for the Friars that moved into the second frame gave the visitors an 8-5 advantage. The run was halted by face-off specialist Jake Oemcke, who won at the "X" before streaking down the field and firing a shot into the back of the net for his first tally of the season.
As St. John's continued to cut into the lead, Huber's historical hat-trick was complete with 10:15 left in the second quarter. Saturday marked the eighth game this season that the Great, River, N.Y., native netted three goals or more.
The Johnnies continued to claw their way back before Corey Hall fired in a long-range shot from the Red Storm defensive half to retake a 9-8 lead with 7:38 remaining in the half. After outscoring the Red Storm 3-2 in the rest of the quarter, courtesy of two goals from Matt Grillo, the Friars took a 12-10 halftime advantage.
In the third quarter Providence got on the board quickly before Ednie launched in his second of three goals on a dish from fellow senior honoree Willis to make it 13-11. Providence added the next four tallies in the middle of the third period to build a cushion. Kelly ended the run after a Willis pass put him one-on-one with the Friars goaltender Michael Harris for the goal and a quick Zuhoski goal brought deficit back to four.
In the final quarter, Providence responded with the next three goals to push its advantage to seven. Ednie tallied the final goal of the season with 40 seconds remaining to complete his second career hat-trick.
Prior to Saturday's game, 11 seniors: Brody Agres, Ro Bryan, Francis Cannizzo, Matt Duncan, Ednie, Mackenzie Iacocca Graham Roediger, Josh Shoop, Richard Sullivan, Tom Urena and Willis were honored on the field for their contributions to the program.
