Stags scored seven unanswered runs to close the game
QUEENS, N.Y. – Trailing 5-4 after seven innings, Fairfield scored seven runs over the final two frames to take down St. John's, 11-5, on Tuesday at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Jayson Kramer had a career day at the dish for the Johnnies, going 2-for-4 with a walk and four RBIs. Kramer was one of three Johnnies to record a multi-hit effort, as Chris Conniff and Kevin Michaels both singled twice for the Red Storm (11-18).
Carlos Hidalgo reached base three times, tallying a single and two walks to go along with an RBI and two runs scored.
Freshman Dylan Johnson started the contest on the mound, striking out five and allowing only two hits over 3.0 scoreless frames.
The Johnnies struck first in the bottom of the second, as Hidalgo and Austin Machado walked to set up a two-RBI single off the bat of Kramer.
The Red Storm added another run in the home half of the third, as Michaels ripped a one-out single before three walks brought him home, pushing the St. John's lead to three after three innings of play.
Fairfield used a two-run homer in the fourth followed by a solo shot in the fifth to even the score at three apiece. The Stags' lead, however, was short-lived, as Kramer ripped an RBI single through the right side to score Hidalgo and put the Johnnies back on top, 4-3.
The Stags leveled the score once again at four apiece in the top of the sixth on a Griffin Watson RBI single before Hidalgo responded with a run-scoring knock of his own in the home half to put St. John's ahead, 5-4, after six.
After a scoreless seventh for both sides, the Stags jumped ahead with a four-run top of the eighth. The first four Fairfield batters of the frame reached base, knotting the score at five, before Chuck Sanzio entered and retired the next two with a strikeout and a pop-fly to first. Fairfield's Matt Zaffio drew an eight-pitch RBI walk to put the Stags ahead by one before Mike Caruso smoked a two-run single down the left-field line, giving Fairfield an 8-5 lead after seven and a half.
The Red Storm will return to action on Friday night, traveling to Storrs for its BIG EAST opener against No. 25 Connecticut. First pitch from Elliot Ballpark is set for 6:05 p.m.
