Red Storm and Gaels to meet for second time in two weeks
QUEENS, N.Y. - After sweeping a doubleheader from Seton Hall on Sunday, the St. John's baseball team will return home to face the Iona Gaels for the second time in two weeks. First pitch from Jack Kaiser Stadium is set for 6:00 p.m.
The final home midweek contest will be live streamed on ESPN3, and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
Dylan Johnson will get the start for the Johnnies on Wednesday. The freshman righthander owns a 5.16 ERA and worked a scoreless ninth inning in the Red Storm's 8-3 win over the Gaels on April 27.
Brandon Backman put together his best performance of the season on the mound on Sunday, tossing a two-hit shutout to power a 6-0 game two win over Seton Hall. Backman's complete game was the first by a Johnnie since Joe LaSorsa in 2019 and the first shutout since Sean Mooney in 2017. The graduate righthander only allowed two hits and four total baserunners in his nine innings of work in South Orange, N.J. For his efforts, Backman was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the second time this season on Monday.
The team's new leader in batting average, Tate Ballestero hit .500 in three games last week to elevate his season average to .335 and join Backman on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the first time in his Johnnies career. The Garden State native made the most of his time in New Jersey over the weekend, including going 4-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored in the series-clinching win over the Pirates. Ballestero has recorded two or more base knocks in a team-high 18 games and paces the Red Storm with a .422 on-base percentage.
Kevin Michaels hit his sixth home run of the season on Sunday and tallied four RBIs in the two victories over Seton Hall. Michaels' two-run shot in the 6-0 win against the Pirates was his second road round tripper this season and third in conference play. The Encinitas, Calif., native boasts a squad-best 42 RBIs and has recorded two or more RBIs in 12 starts. Michaels also provides plenty of power at the dish, leading the Johnnies in slugging percentage (.550), OPS (.943) and extra-base hits (21).
Entering the double-digit home run club, David Glancy hit his team-leading 10th home run of the season on Sunday, a game-tying solo shot in the 8-6 game one triumph over Seton Hall. Glancy ranks second on the roster in RBIs (36), slugging percentage (.519) and OPS (.911). Glancy is one of two position players to start all 47 games for the Johnnies this season.
Jackson Tucker has made a strong impression at the top of the lineup, reaching base at a .411 clip with a team-high 28 walks. Tucker ranks second on the Red Storm in runs scored with 36 and hit his first triple and second home run of the season on Sunday. Tucker leads the Johnnies in steals, swiping 13 bags this season.
Iona enters Wednesday's matchup with a record of 5-38, winning its most recent weekend series against Siena.
Jake Field leads the Gaels on the offensive side of the ball, hitting .309 with 11 doubles, six triples, two home runs and 20 RBIs. Field has tallied two or more hits in 15 games.
On the mound, Drew Helmstetter owns a team-low 5.44 ERA with a 2-1 record and 25 strikeouts in nine appearances.
St. John's leads the all-time series with Iona, 58-11, winning the last 12 matchups, including the previous meeting this season.
On April 27, the Red Storm overcame an early two-run deficit and outslugged the Gaels in an 8-3 victory at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
The Johnnies have allowed four runs or less in each of the 12 victories over Iona.
