Angela Saric pitches her first shutout of the season

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (May 4, 2022) – Angela Saric faced just two batters over the minimum as St. John's prevailed in a 4-0 victory over Iona on Wednesday afternoon at Donald E. Walsh Field at Rice Oval.

Saric moved to 2-1 on the season as the senior pitched her first complete game of her senior campaign. The Oakland, N.J., native allowed just two hits while tallying four punchouts to keep the Gaels (21-22) scoreless. The triumph marked her first complete shutout this year.

London Jarrard went 2-for-4 as the freshman recorded two RBIs, her 12th double of the year and a run scored. Melanie Santos hit 2-for-4 in her third multi-hit game of the season as the sophomore came away with a double and an RBI. Madison Wallace went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Natalie Alheidt recorded a hit along with an RBI and a run scored.

Iona pitcher Samantha Rieb fell to 6-8 on the year as the sophomore gave up six hits and four runs.

After four scoreless innings on both sides, the Red Storm offense began to rally in the top of the fifth, beginning with Kaitlyn Lologo reaching after getting thumped by the Gaels pitcher. Anna Freveletti reached on an error, putting runner on the corners before an Alheidt single broke up the scoreless stalemate. An RBI double from Jarrard expanded the Johnnies lead and singles by Wallace and Santos put St. John's ahead, 4-0, heading to the home half of the frame.

Iona attempted to rally in the bottom of the sixth as Brianna Buck reached on an error by the first baseman and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but Saric retired the next two batters to keep the Gaels scoreless.

In the following frame, the senior sealed the win as she struck out the final batter to complete the shutout victory for the Johnnies.

St. John's will play its final BIG EAST series against Seton Hall this weekend. The first game of the three-game series will take place on Friday at 1 p.m.
