The program will continue to join alumnus and founder Saphrona McLennon in the fight against pediatric brain cancer
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's women's track and field program has continued to partner with the Zoefia Alexander Foundation, a charitable organization whose goal is to help and enrich the lives of children battling brain cancer and their families.
The organization was founded by track and field alumnus and program record-holder Saphrona McLennon after she tragically lost her daughter Zoefia Alexandria to brain cancer in 2019. The Red Storm has joined McLennon and her organization by taking part in a virtual 5k in May for the past two seasons as a part of its community service efforts.
"There will never be enough words or the right words to describe my beautiful daughter Zoefia Alexandria," said McLennon. "What I can say is that we lived a lifetime in those 6 years that we spent together. We loved, we learned, and we loved some more! To properly honor her memory is to give other cancer children & their families the opportunities that Zoefia had. So, it was imperative to start this foundation, The Zoefia Alexandria Foundation to be able to do just that and more."
In June, McLennon accepted a copy of a resolution and a proclamation from Governor of New York Kathy Hochul declaring May as Brain Cancer Awareness Month in the state of New York.
