Nicole Gordon’s game-winner lifts the Red Storm to victory over the Hawks
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's Nicole Gordon fired in a game-winner in the 85th minute, lifting the women's soccer team over Saint Joseph's, 2-1, in the season opener at Belson Stadium on Thursday night.
Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Jessica Garziano scored the first goal of the year for the Red Storm. The midfielder converted her penalty attempt in the 36th minute to break up the stalemate. Gordon sent an unassisted blast by the Hawks (0-1) for the game-clinching tally.
Gina Muzi earned her first ever career start and the goalkeeper logged six saves during her debut. The netminder allowed just one goal as she moved to 1-0 for the season.
The Hawks offense came out hot, posting a shot on goal within the first two minutes of the match. The Red Storm took hold of the momentum with Gordon and Melina Couzis posting back-to-back shots early in the first half.
In the 36th minute, Lauryn Tran drew a penalty, as the sophomore was fouled inside the box by a Saint Joseph's defender. Garziano took the penalty kick, converting the attempt as she placed the ball in the bottom of the net to give the Johnnies the 1-0 advantage. The score held heading into the break.
Coming out of the locker room, the Hawks offense began to threaten, posting three unanswered shots before Miranda Behr scored the equalizer in the 70th minute. Chloe Khelil fired in a cross to an unmarked Berh who tucked it home.
Looking to take back the lead, Isabelle Aviza sent a ball towards an empty net in the 81st minute, but a team save by Saint Joseph's spoiled the senior's attempt. Holding the momentum, the Johnnie offense went on the attack again with Gordon dribbling around the Hawk defenders before scoring the game-winning goal through the left side of the net in the 85th minute.
St. John's looked to hang on with the clock winding down and the defense did not allow a shot attempt from the Hawks during the final five minutes. The impressive effort sealed the opening night triumph for St. John's
The win marks the 11th consecutive victory for the Johnnies in their home opener. The Red Storm took down George Mason, 2-0, in 2012 to start the streak.
St. John's hits the road for a Sunday matinee at NJIT. The game is set for noon and will be broadcast on AmericaEast.TV.
