Red Storm battles Highlanders on the road.
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's soccer team travels to NJIT for a Sunday showdown at Lubetkin Field. The non-conference battle will begin at noon and will be broadcast on AmericaEast.TV.
The Red Storm won a thriller on opening night as the Johnnies took down Saint Joseph's, 2-1, at Belson Stadium on Thursday. Jessica Garziano scored on a penalty kick during the 36th minute for St. John's first goal of the season. This marked the third-straight time Garziano tallied the Johnnies first goal of the year. The Preseason All-BIG EAST selection scored in the Johnnies season openers against UAlbany and NJIT in 2020 and 2021, respectively.
Nicole Gordon fired in the go-ahead goal during the 85th minute. The Amityville, N.Y., native weaved past the Hawks defenders before sending the game-winning goal through the left side of the net. The Johnnie defense did not allow a single shot from the Hawks following the game-clinching tally.
Gina Muzi earned her first career start and the goalkeeper logged six saves on the night. The netminder allowed just one goal as she moved to 1-0 for the season.
Also earning her first collegiate start was Emily Riggins. The Bethpage, N.Y., product was the lone freshman to appear in the match for the Red Storm, logging 75 minutes in her debut.
The triumph over the Hawks marked the 11th consecutive victory for the Johnnies in their home opener. The Red Storm began the streak when the squad took down George Mason, 2-0, in 2012.
NJIT comes into Sunday's match with a 1-0 record after taking down LIU, 4-0, in its season opener. The Highlanders were led by sophomore Ciara Adams, who secured her first career brace with NJIT's first two goals of the contest. Molly Saylor came away with a clean sheet as the goalkeeper logged one save during the shutout victory.
Head Coach Ally Nick enters her seventh season at NJIT in 2022. She boasts a 43-46-11 career record with the Highlanders. Last season NJIT went 7-10-2 overall with a 5-3-1 mark against America East opponents.
This will be just the second meeting between the teams. During the first-ever match between the programs, St. John's topped NJIT during the 2021 season-opening match. Garziano scored the first goal of the match during the 25th minute. Former Red Storm standout Zsani Kajan added a pair of goals for the 3-0 victory.
St. John's returns to Belson Stadium for a Thursday night clash with Sacred Heart. The battle with the Pioneers will begin at 7 p.m.
