St. John’s Draws with NJIT, 2-2

Jessica Garziano and Jailene DeJesus score in match with Highlanders
NEWARK, N.J. – The St. John's women's soccer team drew with NJIT, 2-2, at Lubetkin Field on Sunday afternoon.
Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Jessica Garziano scored her second goal in as many games. The midfielder also added her first assist of the season when Jailene DeJesus fired in a goal for the Red Storm (1-0-1). The tally marked the first career goal for sophomore DeJesus.
The St. John's offense was aggressive from the jump, posting four shots in the first 17 minutes of action. In the 20th minute, Molly Feighan found Garziano at the top of the box before the midfielder sent a blast past the NJIT (1-0-1) keeper for the first score of the day.
However, the Johnnie lead was short-lived as the Highlanders added a tally less than two minutes later. NJIT's Kelsey Ramos sent the equalizer past Red Storm goalkeeper Gina Muzi, tying the match, 1-1. The Red Storm continued to attack the Highlander defense, firing off six more shots before the half, but NJIT keeper Molly Saylor stalled the Red Storm, keeping the score 1-1 at the break.
The Johnnies made a change in goal to begin the second half as Megan Sical came in for the Red Storm. The goalie faced a shot that went high before allowing a goal to give NJIT the 2-1 edge in the 63rd minute.
St. John's remained on the attack following the opposition's tally, with shots by Michelle Money and Athina Sofroniou keeping the NJIT defense on edge. However, in the 78th minute, Garziano sent a ball past the Highlander defenders and to the foot of DeJesus, who fired a shot into the goal for the Red Storm.
Tied 2-2 with time winding down, Nicole Gordon and Isabelle Aviza blasted shots towards the NJIT goal. However, both missed wide right, and the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
The Red Storm outshot NJIT, 18-5, and held the 8-2 edge with shots on goal. The Johnnies also earned four corner kicks during the match.
St. John's returns to Belson Stadium for a Thursday night clash with Sacred Heart. The battle with the Pioneers will begin at 7 p.m.
