Red Storm returns to Belson Stadium for match with Pioneers
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's soccer team returns to Belson Stadium for a match with Sacred Heart on Thursday night. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN3 with Drew Casey on the call.
The Red Storm enters the week following a 2-2 draw at NJIT on Sunday. In the 20th minute, Molly Feighan found Jessica Garziano for the first goal of the match. Jailene DeJesus tallied her first-career goal during the draw. Garziano threaded a ball through the NJIT defense and to the foot of the sophomore midfielder, who flicked a shot past the Highlander goalie and into the net in the 78th minute. The Red Storm outshot NJIT in the match, 18-5, and held the 8-2 edge in shots on target.
St. John's won its home opener last week, topping Saint Joseph's, 2-1, in thrilling fashion. Garziano scored on a penalty kick during the 36th minute for the Johnnies' first goal of the season. Nicole Gordon fired in the go-ahead goal during the 85th minute. The Amityville, N.Y., native weaved past the Hawks defenders before sending the game-winning goal through the left side of the net. The Johnnie defense did not allow a single shot from the Hawks following the game-clinching tally.
After recording two goals and an assist through her first two matches, Garziano garnered national recognition and was named to the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week. Garziano previously checked in at no. 68 on TopDrawerSoccer's Preseason Top 100. The senior was also named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. She leads the conference with 12 shots this season. The senior's four shots on goal per game is also a league best and currently ranks third nationally.
Sacred Heart comes to Queens with an 0-1 record this season. The Pioneers dropped their season opener against Vermont, 0-2, on Thursday. The Catamounts outshot SHU, 24-12, and held the 11-9 advantage with shots on frame. Goalkeeper Elyssa Kipperman logged nine saves during her 90 minutes of work.
Matt Micros is in his fifth season at the helm for the Sacred Heart program. Just the third head coach in program history, Micros boasts a 24-34-6 record overall with the Pioneers. Last season, his squad went 8-7-2 with a 6-3-1 mark in conference play. SHU made it to the NEC Semifinals before a 5-3 season-ending loss to Fairleigh Dickinson.
Thursday will mark the fifth all-time meeting between the two programs, with St. John's leading claiming all four prior contests. The Red Storm have outscored the Pioneers, 9-1, during the first four matchups between the teams.
