Right-hander made 34 appearances in three seasons with the Red Storm
QUEENS, N.Y. – Former St. John's right-hander Joe Joe Rodriguez has inked a deal with the New York Mets organization, it was announced on Thursday.
Rodriguez signed with the Mets after spending part of the summer in the MLB Draft League with the Trenton Thunder. In 10 appearances, eight of which were starts, Rodriguez went 2-2 with a 2.17 ERA. He held opponents to a .246 batting average and did not allow a home run over 37.1 frames.
As a graduate student in 2022, Rodriguez started 10 of his 15 appearances and logged a team-high 63.2 innings pitched. He fanned a team-best 53 batters and also picked up one save on the campaign.
Rodriguez made 15 appearances, all in relief, during the 2021 season, going 2-2 with a 5.32 ERA. The winner of the athletic department's John DaSilva Memorial Award for courage, persistence and fortitude following the tragic death of his younger brother Ayden, Rodriguez picked up the team's most dramatic win of the season, tossing the final 4.0 frames of an extra-inning win against Seton Hall at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
During the truncated 2020 campaign, his first with the Red Storm, Rodriguez made four starts. His lone win of the season earned him a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after he allowed just one run and one hit in 6.0 innings of work against Cal on Feb. 22 in Berkeley. Rodriguez limited opponents to a .224 batting average on the year.
Following a standout career at Cumberland Community College that featured a Division III JUCO College World Series title, Rodriguez was taken in the 20th round of the 2019 MLB Draft by the Cincinnati Reds before electing to attend St. John's.
With the exception of 2020, which featured only a five-round draft because of the COVID-19 pandemic, St. John's has had at least one player drafted or signed to a free-agent contract every year since 1989.
