The Red Storm hits the road for final non-conference match
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's soccer team closes out its non-conference slate against Cornell at Berman Field on Saturday. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
The Johnnies dropped a battle at Lehigh on Sunday, 1-0, to fall to 3-2-2 on the season. The Mountain Hawks hit the game-winner with 47 seconds remaining as Erin Keefe powered a ball into the back of the net off a corner kick. Four Johnnies logged shots on target during the road contest while goalkeeper Gina Muzi tallied five saves in the match.
Muzi earned her first-ever nod on the BIG EAST Honor Roll this past week. The Delafield, Wis., native logged a clean sheet in the Red Storm's 3-0 takedown of Central Connecticut State on Sept. 5. She made six saves during her 1-1-0 week.
The honor marked the fourth-straight week a St. John's player earned recognition from the conference. Jessica Garziano was named to the honor roll in back-to-back weeks to start the season and Michelle Money also earned a spot on the list after converting a game-clinching penalty kick against Navy on Sept. 2.
Cornell comes into the match at 1-4-2 on the year. The lone victory for Big Red came against BIG EAST foe Villanova in a 2-1 triumph at Berman Field. The Big Red's last contest ended in a 1-1 tie at Binghamton. Laken Gallman tallied the singular goal for the Cornell squad as she sent a header off a free kick to the left of the net.
Gallman leads the Big Red squad with three goals and six points for the 2022 campaign. The junior is second on the team with 15 shots, just behind Ashley Durik with 17 attempts this season. Defensively, Nicole Shulman has started all seven matches between the pipes for Cornell. The San Mateo, Calif., native has made 20 stops and allowed 11 goals this year. Sharing time in goal is Erica Fox, who has made two saves and allowed two goals.
The Red Storm is undefeated against Cornell, boasting a 2-0-1 record against the Big Red. The first meeting between the programs came in 2002 in the ECAC title match when the Johnnies took home the championship on penalty kicks, 3-1. The teams last met in 2019 at Belson Stadium when St. John's came away with the 2-0 victory. Saturday's contest will be the first-ever game between the programs at Berman Field.
St. John's opens its conference slate at Georgetown next Thursday. Kickoff from the Maryland Soccerplex is slated for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on FS1.
