Red Storm will compete in Stony Brook’s home event for the first time in program history
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's cross country team will open the 2022 campaign on Saturday with a visit to nearby Stony Brook, N.Y., to compete in the Stony Brook Invite. The time for the 4k race is set for 10:30 a.m.
Several top student-athletes will be returning, including team MVP Claire Cushing. Cushing logged three top-10 individual finishes in 2021, including a win at the Fordham Fiasco on Sept. 11. Hannah Huleatt, Jenna D'Onofrio, Gabriella Caronia and Tiffany-Ann Matturro round out the returners for the Johnnies. Four freshmen, Chloe Jacinto, Ana Markovina, Leilani Robinson and Ezgi Yasar will also be joining the squad and will look to get their respective collegiate careers off to strong starts at Stony Brook.
The Red Storm will compete in Stony Brook's home event for the first time in program history and will start a season outside of The Five Boroughs for the first time in seven seasons when it traveled to New Jersey for the Monmouth Invite in 2015.
The Johnnies will battle against several local rivals as Fordham, Columbia and Wagner will make the trek to Suffolk County for the season opener.
This marks the second season for Head Coach Elliott Blount, who led the Johnnies to three top-three finishes as a team in 2021, including a second-place finish in the season opener at the Fordham Fiasco in September.
