Diogo Marques and Axel Vila Antuna Venture to ITA All-American Championships

Red Storm pair will face nation’s top players in Tulsa, Okla.
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's men's tennis players Axel Vila Antuna and Diogo Marques will venture to Tulsa, Okla. to compete against the nation's best at the ITA All-American Championships.
Both players are slated to compete in the pre-qualifying, 256-player singles draw beginning on Saturday, Oct. 1, from the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Vila Antuna made a splash in his first season at St. John's, after transferring from Lamar. The Spaniard was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team and led the Red Storm to its third-consecutive BIG EAST Championship match. During the 2021-22 season, he appeared exclusively at the no. 1 position in both singles and doubles, posting a combined record of 22-9. Vila Antuna was tabbed as high as the no. 97 singles player in the country according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Marques arrives as a graduate transfer following an impressive career at Stetson. After playing two years at East Carolina, the Setubal, Portugal, native starred for the Hatters logging a 26-15 combined record over his career. Last season, Marques exclusively competed in the no. 1 position and was named All-ASUN First Team selection. He earned two conference player of the week awards and was one of three Stetson players to reach double-figures in victories.
The Red Storm made its first appearance of the 2022-23 campaign last weekend at home for the Hofstra/ St. John's Invite. Marques and Vila Antuna teamed up in doubles and tallied a pair of victories
Last year at this event, four Johnnies competed including Vila Antuna, who grabbed a win over UT-Arlington's Nick Beamish in straight-sets. Udayan Bhakar notched the best finish advancing to the Round of 64 of the pre-qualifying bracket.
