Red Storm and Hoosiers to meet Tuesday night at 8 p.m. on B1G+
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – St. John's and Indiana will resume one of this century's most storied college soccer rivalries when the two teams meet on Tuesday night in Bloomington.
Kick-off at Armstrong Stadium is set for 8 p.m. on B1G+ with William McDermott, Austin Platt and Brianna Ballog on the call.
St. John's enters the contest on the heels of its first win of the season, a 5-0 drubbing of Lehigh on Friday evening at Belson Stadium. The Johnnies lost their first two decisions of the season by scores of 1-0 despite outshooting the opposition by a combined margin of 23-9, including a 15-3 edge over then-No. 18 FIU last Monday night in Queens.
Against Lehigh, Antek Sienkiel became the first St. John's player in nearly two decades to record a hat trick. The 2021 Second Team All-MAAC selection at Marist recorded the first three-goal game by a Johnnie since Andrei Gatsmanov on Oct. 30, 2004. Sienkiel's hat trick marked the 21st overall in St. John's history.
For his efforts, Sienkiel was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, the first St. John's player to garner the accolade since Tani Oluwaseyi on Oct. 7, 2019. In 40 career appearances entering the Lehigh game, Sienkiel had recorded two goals and two assists for six points.
Sienkiel wasn't the only Johnnie to log an impressive performance on Friday night. Senior Wesley Leggett scored a goal and assisted on another. Freshman Miguel Diaz registered two assists in his first collegiate game, setting up each of Sienkiel's first two goals. Brandon Knapp also scored his first tally of the season on a penalty kick while Drew Rosen added an assist.
Freshman goalkeeper Zenden Hart impressed in first first two collegiate appearances last week, allowing only one goal in 180 minutes of action. The former keeper for the Australian U17 national team notched two saves against No. 18 FIU before stopping all four shots on goal he faced against Lehigh. Hart is part of a young goalkeeping core that is looking to fill the shoes of Luka Gavran, a 2021 Third Team All-American who led the nation in shutouts (12) and save percentage (.844) a year ago before being selected 31st overall by Toronto FC in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft.
Hart is not the only freshman anchoring the Red Storm's efforts on the defensive end of the pitch. Markus Pusztahegyi, a longtime standout in the Toronto FC academy system and a former Canadian international player at the youth level, has started both of the Red Storm's matches at centerback. Ricky Schissler, a United Soccer Coaches All-American last year at Archbishop Curley High School in Maryland, made his first collegiate start and logged 79 minutes against Lehigh on Friday.
St. John's and Indiana will meet for the ninth time in the history of the two programs on Tuesday night, a series that has seen each side claim three wins and a pair of draws.
The teams first faced off in August of 2001, a 2-1 win for the Red Storm in Bloomington. Later that season, the Hoosiers had the upper hand in the national semifinal, defeating St. John's, 2-1, in double overtime. St. John's picked up another regular season win, 3-0, in 2002, but the following fall featured an Indiana win on the highest stage, as the Hoosiers beat St. John's, 2-1, in the national title match. The next time the teams met resulted in the greatest game ever played at Belson Stadium. With St. John's trialing 2-0 and nine minutes left to play the national quarterfinal, Joel Gustafsson and Sverre Wegge Gundhus each scored to force overtime before Nelson Becerra converted on a golden goal PK to send St. John's to the College Cup. The Red Storm and Hoosiers played to scoreless draws in 2009 and 2011 before a 1-0 Indiana win in their last meeting in 2015.
Indiana enters the contest with a record of 0-1-1 after losing, 3-2, at defending national champion Clemson to open the season and settling for a 3-3 draw against Portland at home. The Hoosiers were scheduled to host No. 8 Notre Dame on Saturday, but inclement weather forced the postponement of that contest.
Four Hoosiers have found the back of the net so far in 2022, led by Ryan Wittenbrink with a pair of tallies. Wittenbrink was one of three Hoosiers alongside Herbert Endeley and Daniel Munie to be named Big Ten Players to Watch by the conference office before the start of the season.
Like St. John's, the Hoosiers featured a different starting goalkeeper in each of their first two games. JT Harms started the opener against Clemson, making six saves in the 3-2 loss. Bryant Pratt started last Tuesday's match against Portland and did not record a stop.
