Women’s Tennis Drops Opener to FGCU, 5-2

The Red Storm will finish the two-day Florida trip on Saturday against North Texas
FORT MYERS, Fla. (Jan. 13, 2023) – After a lengthy five-hour rain delay, the St. John's women's tennis team captured the doubles point, but ultimately fell at Florida Gulf Coast, 5-2.
To start off the day, the Johnnies claimed two of the three matches in doubles competition to take a 1-0 lead. Emilie Haakansson and Mouna Bouzgarrou recorded a win over Jordana Ossa and Gabriela Macias, 6-4. In the no. 1 slot, Jayden Nielsen and Yesica de Lucas were edged in the tiebreak and fell 7-6 (7-3) to Emma Bardet and Ida Ferding. Willa Bay Breunich and Camila Ordonez clinched the doubles point with a narrow 7-6 (9-7) victory over Fanny Norin and Isabella Colmenares.
In singles play, the Eagles got rolling taking five of six possible matches. Yesica de Lucas took the lone win in the no. 4 slot, 6-4, 7-5, over FGCU's Amelia Kopel. After winning the first set 7-6 (4), Lalita Devarakonda fell in the second set, 2-6, and was outlasted in the third and final set, 8-10.
St. John's will conclude the two-match Florida trip on Saturday with a match set for 12:30 p.m. against North Texas at the Fort Myers Tennis Complex. The Mean Green took its opening contest, 6-1, over Miami (OH) on Friday in Fort Myers.
