Red Storm to meet Florida Gulf Coast and North Texas in Fort Myers
QUEENS, N.Y. (Jan. 12, 2023)- The St. John's women's tennis team will open up its 2023 dual-match season this weekend with a pair of matches in Florida.
The Red Storm will take on Florida Gulf Coast on Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. before meeting North Texas the next day at 12:30 p.m. Both matches will be played at the FGCU Tennis Complex in Fort Myers.
The Red Storm look to carry its momentum of a strong spring season in 2022, when it went 18-6, tying a program record for dual-match wins in a single-season.
The entire roster will return for Head Coach Lauren Leo, who enters her eighth year at the helm. St. John's welcomes back a pair of All-BIG EAST selections Mouna Bouzgarrou (First Team) and Jayden Nielsen (Second Team).
During the fall slate, Nielsen and Yesica de Lucas shined as a doubles team. The duo advanced to quarterfinal round of the ITA Northeast Regionals and recorded a win at the All-American Championships against the nation's top talent.
Florida Gulf Coast will commence their season on Friday, after winning a share of the ASUN regular season title last season. The Eagles finished 14-7 on the year and held an 8-1 mark in conference play.
The two schools met last season in the Sunshine State and then-no. 74 FGCU narrowly clawed out a win, 4-3. The squads were knotted at 3-3, before the Eagles' Jordan Ossa rallied back to pull out a victory.
On Saturday, St. John's will square off with North Texas on a neutral court, marking the first time the two schools have ever competed in women's tennis. The Mean Green logged a 10-12 record during the 2022 season a .500 mark during C-USA play.
Prior to its matchup with the Red Storm, North Texas will play Miami Ohio on Friday at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
The pair of contests in Florida mark the first two of three road matches to start the year before their home opener against Marist on Jan. 27.
