QUEENS, N.Y. (Jan. 25, 2023)- The St. John's women's tennis team opens the home portion of their season, with a three-match homestand. The Johnnies take on Marist on Friday night with the doubles matches set to start 12:15 p.m. and will be held at the UTSA Tennis Center. On Saturday, the Johnnies will host the Fairfield Stags at 7:15 at Queens College.
The Red Storm enter their home-opening weekend after three straight road matches to open the spring campaign. The Red Storm fell to Dartmouth, in its third straight road contest. Yesica de Lucas claimed two wins on the day including a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles. Willa Bay Breunich also earned a singles victory on the day defeating Lexi DeWire, 7-6 (7), 7-5.
Last spring, St. John's finished with an impressive 18-6 record, tying a program record for dual-match wins in a single-season. Returning the entire roster, the Johnnies have become a veteran team and hope to string wins together similar to last season's campaign.
Head Coach Lauren Leo, is in her eighth year at the helm. St. John's welcomes back a pair of 2022 All-BIG EAST selections Mouna Bouzgarrou (First Team) and Jayden Nielsen (Second Team).
During the fall slate, Jayden Nielsen and de Lucas shined as a doubles team. The duo advanced to quarterfinal round of the ITA Northeast Regionals and recorded a win at the All-American Championships against the nation's top talent.
Friday's match will mark the season opener for Marist. The Red Foxes were selected to finish fifth in the MAAC Preseason poll released last week. Last spring Marist finished 4-10 overall and 2-4 in league play.
The Red Storm have won both matches against the Red Foxes, with the most recent a 4-0 victory at UTSA Tennis Center in 2019.
Fairfield will also open its spring slate against the Johnnies. The Stags were slotted to finish second in the MAAC preseason poll. Fairfield went 10-11 overall, and was 4-2 in conference matches. The Stags earned a bid to the MAAC title match, but dropped to Quinnipiac. The Stags return all but two of the players on the conference runner-up team.
The Red Storm and Stags have 11 all-time meetings, with the Johnnies victorious in all contests. This will be the ninth time St. John's has hosted the series, but the first time the match will take place at Queens College. The Johnnies won 6-1 at UTSA Tennis Center last spring.
St. John's host Farleigh Dickinson next Friday at 12:15 p.m. at UTSA Tennis Center before a road trip to Monmouth on Sunday.
