Women’s Tennis Sweeps Marist in Home Opener

The Red Storm returns to the court tomorrow against Fairfield
QUEENS, N.Y. (Jan. 27, 2023)- The St. John's women's tennis team swept Marist in the home opener at the UTSA Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
Four individuals grabbed two wins on the day, as the Johnnies improved to 1-3 on the young season.
The Red Storm opened the match with a pair of 6-0 victories in doubles play to earn the first point of the match. The duos of Jayden Nielsen / Yesica de Lucas and Mouna Bouzgarrou / Emilee Haakansson defeated Jane Bockman / Ellen Zurieck and Deana Giambo / Cloe Clements, respectively.
In singles play, the Red Storm didn't drop a set to the Red Foxes. Two Johnnies completed 6-0 6-0 sweeps, Bouzgarrou defeated Cloe Clements, and Nielsen took down Ellen Zurieck. In No.1 singles, Lalita Devarakonda won 6-1, 6-2 against Deana Giambo. De Lucas was one of four players to earn two victories on the day with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Jane Bockman. Concluding the match, Willa Bay Breunich defeated Isabella Tonuzzi, 6-1, 6-0 and Amaya Lopez was victorious against Andrianna Sephiris, 6-0, 6-2.
St. John's will play its second consecutive home match tomorrow night against Fairfield. The Johnnies will host at Queens College, with the doubles matches beginning at 7:15 p.m.
