QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's basketball team opens back-to-back home games against longtime rival Georgetown on Sunday inside Madison Square Garden. FS1 will carry the national telecast at 2 p.m. ET with John Fanta and Tarik Turner on the call.
An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Brandon Tierney will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app. St. John's radio broadcast can also be heard on SiriusXM channel 387 and channel 977 on the SiriusXM app.
Sunday will mark the Red Storm's annual First Responders Day, as the program will honor the contributions of everyday heroes who selflessly serve the citizens of the city and region. In addition, St. John's and MSG will honor the late Howard Garfinkel, a legendary figure in college basketball. A mentor to legendary coaches and the game's first national recruiting guru, "Garf" most notably ran the Five-Star Basketball Camp and was a fixture at college basketball events at The Garden.
2,500 fans will also go home with a custom St. John's Basketball cup courtesy of Maspeth Federal Savings.
St. John's (13-8, 3-7 BIG EAST) will look to snap its recent two-game slide after suffering setbacks against Villanova and Creighton. AJ Storr was a bright spot in Wednesday's game against the Bluejays, scoring a career-high 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including 3-of-5 from deep. The freshman guard has increased his production since entering the starting lineup on Jan. 7, averaging 11.8 points per game shooting 48.8 percent (21-43 FG) and 50.0 percent (8-16 3FG) from 3-point territory.
Joel Soriano also recorded double figures for the 12th-straight game on Wednesday in Omaha, posting 18 points going 7-for-11 from the floor while grabbing nine rebounds. The Yonkers native remains atop the NCAA leaderboard with 17 double-doubles this season.
In a rivalry that runs deep, the Johnnies will square off against the Hoyas for the 121st time in program history. The Red Storm holds a 63-57 advantage in a series that dates back to 1909. St. John's will look to continue its recent stretch of success against the Hoyas, as the Johnnies have won the last three contests and five of the last six meetings.
Last season, the Johnnies picked up an 88-69 victory inside "The World's Most Famous Arena." Posh Alexander put together a complete effort against the Hoyas in that game, hitting all four of his shots from the floor and going 9-of-10 from the charity stripe for 17 points. The Brooklyn native also registered seven assists, six rebounds and six steals. In four career games against the Hoyas, Alexander is averaging 13.3 points, 5.5 assists and 3.8 steals per game.
Georgetown (6-15, 1-9 BIG EAST) broke through for its first conference win of the season, downing DePaul, 81-76, on Tuesday. Leading scorer Primo Spears paced the Hoyas with 21 points to go with six assists. The Duquesne transfer is averaging a league-high 37.3 minutes per game - the sixth highest average in Division I. Spears also ranks second in the BIG EAST with 16.8 points and 5.5 assists per contest.
The Hoyas rank fourth in the BIG EAST averaging 4.7 blocks per contest. UConn transfer Akok Akok has recorded nearly half of the team's blocks, swatting 1.95 per contest.
