Red Storm suffered its first loss of the season at Walsh Gymnasium
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.- The No. 24/23 St. John's women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on the road at Seton Hall on Wednesday night, 72-51.
After leading by nine at the break, the Pirates outscored the Red Storm 25-12 in the third quarter to run away with the contest inside Walsh Gymnasium.
Seton Hall (12-4, 5-1 BIG EAST) was powered by Lauren Park Lane (15 points and 11 assists), Sidney Cooks (17 points and 12 rebounds) and Amari Wright (17 points and seven steals).
For St. John's (13-1, 4-1 BIG EAST), Kadaja Bailey led all scorers with 18 points on the evening, the most points the redshirt senior has logged since a 23-point outing in the season-opener against Monmouth on Nov.7.
Jayla Everett finished with 11 points, as the shooting guard has reached double-figures in scoring in every game she has appeared in.
Jillian Archer had another stellar evening in the rebounding department grabbing 12 total boards. The graduate student has corralled nine or more rebounds in five of her last six contests.
As a team, St John's controlled the glass against Seton Hall by a margin of 37-32. Rayven Peeples finished with nine boards in South Orange.
After an offensive struggle by both sides for most of the opening quarter, Everett scored five-straight points late in the quarter. Seton Hall ended the first frame with a six-point lead, 17-11.
To open the second frame the Pirates capitalized off turnovers to confront the Johnnies with its first double-digit deficit of the season. A drive by Bailey had the Johnnies trailing by just six, 28-22, as she absorbed a foul during the finish but was unable to convert at the free-throw line.
In the final minute of the first half, Unique Drake buried a corner triple off an assist from Everett to make it 32-25. Seton Hall's Mya Bembry knocked down a mid-range with five seconds left in the second stanza to give the Pirates a 34-25 advantage at the half.
The home squad opened the second half on a 11-2 run and never looked back, as it padded its lead in the third quarter. The Pirates finished the frame shooting 11-for-15 (73.3 percent) from the floor.
In the final quarter, Bailey hit a open corner three-pointer to complete her 18-point performance with 6:19 remaining in the game.
After Seton Hall continued to further its advantage, freshman Jailah Donald logged the last four points of the evening with a pair of lay-up's.
The Red Storm will return to Carnesecca Arena to take on Xavier on Jan. 8 at 2 p.m. before facing No. 5 Connecticut in the first-ever women's college basketball game at UBS Arena on Jan. 11 at 8 p.m.
