Red Storm look to bounce back after first loss of the season
QUEENS, N.Y.- The No. 24/23 St. John's women's basketball team returns to Carnesecca Arena for its first home contest of 2023 against Xavier on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Matt Ambrose and Kim Adams will have the call of Sunday's conference clash that will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports.
The Johnnies look to bounce back after suffering their first loss of the season on Wednesday night at Seton Hall, 72-51. Kadaja Bailey tallied her highest point total in 13 games, scoring 18 in the road loss. Jillian Archer pulled down 12 rebounds on Wednesday, and the forward has averaged 12.7 boards over her last three outings.
Jayla Everett reached double-figures in scoring for the 15th consecutive contest, dating back to last season after adding 11 points in South Orange. The shooting guard leads the team and slides in at eighth in the league recording 16.6 points per game.
After only committing six fouls at Walsh Gymnasium, the Red Storm now leads the nation in fewest fouls per game with 11.7. The Red Storm have played smart defensively against BIG EAST competition, only fouling 10.6 times per league contest.
The Red Storm currently holds a 13-1 record and a 4-1 mark in conference play on the 2022-23 season heading into its meeting with Xavier.
Last season, the conference foes met three times, including twice over the course of four days with the Johnnies logging a trio of victories. The first tilt in Queens on Feb. 2 held historic implications, as the 83-63 victory lifted Head Coach Joe Tartamella to his 177th win, making him the all-time winningest coach in program history. In Cincinnati on Feb. 6, Bailey went for 21 points on 7-of-8 shooting to storm past the Musketeers in dominant fashion, 96-62. The last time came in the BIG EAST First Round where the Johnnies rallied from an eight-point fourth quarter deficit to advance with a 76-69 win.
Xavier lost its fifth-straight contest when it faced Connecticut on Thursday night and hold a 7-8 record on the year. The Musketeers are 2-1 on the road this year and are playing their first game outside of Cincinnati since Dec. 4, 2022, when they fell at Georgetown. Mackayla Scarlett leads the squad scoring 12.3 points per game.
St. John's has won 14 straight against its league foe and have taken all eight meetings played at Carnesecca Arena.
The program will host its "Alumni Day" on Sunday, welcoming back former players from over the years and will honor the 2011-12 Sweet 16 squad with an on-court presentation before the game.
