Red Storm took down the Hoyas, 3-1, at Belson last season
QUEENS, N.Y. – With a 4-0-2 record in its last six matches, the St. John's men's soccer team will look to continue its recent success when it heads to the nation's capital for a 1 p.m. contest against Georgetown at Shaw Field on Saturday.
The rivalry match will be streamed on BIG EAST Digital Network on FloFC with Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser on the call. Live stats will also be available at RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm (8-3-3, 3-1-2 BIG EAST) is coming off a 3-0 victory against Seton Hall on Wednesday. Eric Danquah, Nigel Griffith and Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau each found the back of the cage for the Red Storm while Thomas Lamaille and Lenny Cidolit tallied two assists apiece. The St. John's back line staved off all six of Seton Hall's chances with no shots reaching goalkeeper Alec McLachlan and preserving his fourth clean sheet of the season.
Fleuriau Chateau jumped into TopDrawerSoccer.com's Midseason Top 100 on Thursday, sitting at No. 100. The 13th player in program history to reach double-digit goals in a single season increased his total to 11, sitting fifth in NCAA Division I. One of nine players in the nation with 11 or more goals, Fleuriau Chateau also ranks fifth in the country with four game-winning tallies.
The Canadian striker is one tally away from cracking the program's top 10 in single-season goals. He will look to tie the 12 goals scored by Fred Bischoff (1979 & 1980), Roberto DeLuca (1992) and soon-to-be St. John's Hall of Fame Ben Hickey (1995) for ninth on Saturday.
Sophomore Miguel Diaz continues to find himself among the nation's best with BIG EAST-leading eight assists, good for ninth in the nation. Of his eight assists, four have set up Fleuriau Chateau for a goal. With two more helpers, Diaz will be the first Red Storm player in 26 years to tally double-digit assists, marking the first since Stefani Miglioranzi registered 12 in the 1997 season.
Head Coach Dr. David Masur is approaching 400 career wins with the Red Storm, sitting at 397 since his arrival in 1991. Masur also earned his 450th win as a Division I head coach on Wednesday with the team's victory over Seton Hall. With four more victories, the St. John's men's soccer program will reach the 500-win plateau, having secured 496 wins since the program's inception in 1979.
The Red Storm boasts a 24-13-3 all-time record against Georgetown, including a 9-8-1 mark in the nation's capital.
St. John's will look to build off its 3-1 victory against the Hoyas last season, seeing Griffith, Brandon Knapp and Antek Sienkiel all score on Sept. 16, 2022. The Red Storm will try and secure a win in D.C. for the first time since Oct. 27, 2018, when the Johnnies knocked off the No. 24 Hoyas, 1-0, on a Skage Simonsen goal in the 43rd minute.
Georgetown enters Saturday's matchup as the No. 8 team in the nation, going 9-2-1 this season with a 5-1-0 record in conference play.
After suffering its first conference setback to Providence on the road (Oct. 14), Jacob Murrell and Kieran Sargeant netted second-half goals to take down Villanova, 2-0, on Saturday. Murrell leads the way for the Hoyas, tallying nine goals and four assists for 22 points in total. Marlon Tabora is the only other Hoya to log double-digit points this season with three goals and six assists for 12 points in total.
Ryan Schewe and Tenzing Manske have been steady in net for the Hoyas, combining for a 1.08 GAA and 28 saves through 12 contests.
Georgetown, who has not lost a game at Shaw Field since Sept. 10, 2022, against Maryland, has gone four straight home contests without conceding a goal, dating back to its 3-3 draw with Fordham on Sept. 4.
The rivalry match will be streamed on BIG EAST Digital Network on FloFC with Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser on the call. Live stats will also be available at RedStormSports.com.
