Johnnies to compete over four days in Manhattan
The St. John's women's tennis team will play in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeastern Regionals beginning Friday at the Milstein Tennis Center in Manhattan.
Four athletes – Mouna Bouzgarrou, Arina Gumerova, Alicia Gómez and Victoria Papadopoulou – have been selected to participate in the singles competition. Willa Bay Breunich and Camila Ordonez have been tabbed as alternates for the event.
The Red Storm will also have two doubles pairs competing this weekend. Gómez and Noemi Babikova will pair up, as will Breunich and Nicoline Sartz-Lunde. Ordonez and Papadopoulou will serve as the first alternate pair as well.
The four-day event features student-athletes from 22 schools throughout New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Those who advance to the quarterfinal round will earn a bid to the ITA Super Regionals from Oct. 20-23 in West Point, N.Y. Bouzgarrou and Gumerova have already pre-qualified in doubles for Super Regionals.
At last year's Regionals, Bouzgarrou and Emilie Haakansson paired up to win four matches and qualify for Super Regionals.
Last weekend, the Red Storm had their first event of the fall schedule, picking up several wins at the Fall Foliage Fest. Gómez paced the Johnnies, picking up three total wins on the weekend.
