Saturday’s contest at 7 p.m. marks the 38th meeting between the Red Storm and Friars
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer team will look to continue its recent stretch of success when BIG EAST foe Providence visits Belson Stadium on Saturday in a 7 p.m. contest.
Saturday's contest will be streamed on BIG EAST Digital Network on FloFC with Drew Casey on the call. Live stats will also be available for fans at RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm will celebrate Family Weekend with an array of food trucks just outside of Belson Stadium prior to the match.
The Johnnies are fresh off a 2-1 victory over Ivy League rival Columbia, jumping to 6-3-2 on the year while remaining undefeated at Belson Stadium this season with a 4-0-1 mark.
Redshirt junior Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau continued his dominance with his eighth and ninth goals of the season in Tuesday's contest, claiming the BIG EAST lead and ranking third in the nation. The Canadian striker is averaging a goal every 46 minutes and has the fewest minutes logged (422) among the 18 players in the nation with eight or more goals. His nine tallies are also the most by a Johnnie to start a season since Simone Salinno tallied nine of his own to open the 2004 campaign.
Fellow forward Miguel Diaz has also been on a tear, feeding Fleuriau Chateau for both of his goals on Tuesday while four of his seven total assists this season have been on strikes by the Johnnies' leading goal scorer. Diaz jumped into the nation's top five with his seven helpers, good for the BIG EAST lead and sitting fifth in Division I. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native is also one of 13 players to log seven or more assists this season.
Diaz has been instrumental in lifting the Johnnies into the Division I leaderboard for assists, ranking third in the country with 30 helpers on the season. The trio of Diaz, Max McNulty and Macoumba Ba have combined for 14 assists while 16 players in total have registered at least one helper this season.
St. John's enters Saturday's matchup with a 21-11-5 record over the Friars, including a 10-6 mark at Belson. The Red Storm and Friars battled to a 1-1 tie in last season's tilt in Rhode Island, seeing Leggett score the equalizer in the 72nd minute. Goalkeeper Zenden Hart also made a career-high eight saves in that match.
The Johnnies will look to secure its first win over Providence since its Spring matchup on March 20, 2021, when the Red Storm took down the then-No. 13 Friars behind goals from Tani Oluwaseyi and Wesley Leggett. The two goals in that contest were the first Providence allowed through its first six games of the campaign.
The Friars come to Queens with a 4-4-2 record overall while holding a 1-1-1 mark in conference play. Senior Brendan McSorley paces Providence with six goals and 12 points through 10 starts this season. Pearse O'Brien is not far behind with 11 points to his credit, logging three tallies and five helpers.
After a rocky start to the 2023 campaign, goalkeeper Lukas Burns has settled in with back-to-back clean sheets. After a 4-0 win over DePaul where he made one save, the senior keeper had to turn away two shots on frame to earn a 1-0 triumph over Siena on Tuesday.
Providence is ranked 24th in the nation with 2.0 goals per game while ripping 14.4 shots per game, good for 25th.
