Unique Drake went for 24 to lead all scorers
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's women's basketball team recorded a wire-to-wire victory against Loyola Maryland on Wednesday night, 71-49.
Unique Drake led all scorers with another impressive scoring performance finishing with 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting and went 4-of-5 from deep. The redshirt senior has notched a game-high in scoring in six contests and has tallied 24 points or more on four occasions.
Jillian Archer recorded a double-double in the opening half and provided a huge boost in the frontcourt. The graduate student recorded 12 points, 11 boards and three blocks in the winning effort.
Jailah Donald had the best night of her young St. John's career logging 13 points and nailed three triples (3-6), the most in her tenure.
The Red Storm dished out 20 assists for the second time this season. Ber'Nyah Mayo (7) and Skye Owen (6) led the squad in the helper department.
As a team, St. John's shot 29-for-56 (51.8 %) from the floor in Queens on Wednesday night.
The Johnnies controlled the glass out-rebounding the Greyhounds, 38-22.
The Red Storm jumped out to a 6-0 advantage early in the game after Drake pulled up on a fast break and drained a pull-up jumper. St. John's went 6-for-8 to open the game after Drake flushed her first of four triples to double up Loyola Maryland, 16-8 midway through the opening quarter. After a Greyhounds, added a lay-up, St. John's (3-5) exploded on an 8-0 run to end the stanza, 24-10. 24 was the highest point total in the first quarter this season.
A pair of 3-pointers to start off the second frame from Drake and Donald to continue to stretch the advantage, to 18, 30-12. Phoenix Gedeon battled for an offensive board and put up the second-chance bucket through contact to energize the bench. In the final 1:15 of the half, Donald drilled her second 3-pointer and Archer logged a basket to record a first half double-double and take a 25-point lead, 44-19 into the half. The Johnnies allowed less than 20 points in the opening half for the first time this season.
In the third quarter, Drake stretched the St. John's advantage to its largest of the game after knocking down a shot from downtown to make it 47-21. Donald picked up a steal and finished at the other end on the break with a crafty euro step.
In the final frame, Drake flushed a triple off a cross-court feed from Mayo. The captain's fourth make of the game for long-range marked the fourth time this season she has made four 3-pointers or more. The Red Storm carried its sizeable advantage to the end of the contest and got back in the win column at Carnesecca Arena.
The Red Storm will travel up north to Poughkeepsie for a 7 p.m. tip on Saturday night against Marist.
