Unique Drake leads the Johnnies averaging 19.8 points per game
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's basketball team will travel to take on Marist on Saturday night at McCann Arena.
The contest from Poughkeepsie is set to tip-off at 7 p.m. on ESPN+ with Geoff Brault and Steve Egnik on the call.
The Red Storm captured a wire-to-wire victory in its return home to Queens on Wednesday night over Loyola Maryland, 71-49.
The Johnnies opened with a 24-point first quarter and coasted to move to 3-5 on the year. The 24 points in a single frame was a season-high and the most for the program since Jan. 21, 2023, when they poured in 25 in the third quarter in an 81-72 victory at DePaul.
Unique Drake filled it up once again in the decisive win over the Greyhounds for her fourth 24-plus point performance of the season to lead all scorers. The guard finished with 24 on 10-of-16 shooting and 4-of-5 from deep. The Columbia, S.C., native is averaging 19.8 points per game, which ranks fourth in the BIG EAST and 33rd nationally.
On the year, Drake has been stellar from downtown shooting 26-for-53 (49.1 percent) from 3-point range. Her 26 made triples through eight contests ranks sixth in NCAA Division I.
Jillian Archer tallied her third double-double of the campaign on Wednesday night and reached that mark in the opening half. The forward finished the outing with 12 points and 11 boards. The graduate student currently sits fifth in the BIG EAST in rebounding posting 7.9 boards per night. In the scoring department, Archer has finished in double-digits in seven of eight appearances.
Sophomores Skye Owen and Jailah Donald continue to grow in their expanded roles and both finished in double-figures against Loyola Maryland. Donald tallied a career-high 13 points and made three triples while Owen added 11 points and six assists in her first-ever start.
For the second time this season the Red Storm dished out 20 assists in the decisive win over the Greyhounds. The Johnnies assisted 20-of-29 field goals (68.9%) at Carnesecca Arena.
St. John's has been strong from the charity stripe cashing in 77.6 percent (90-116) from the free-throw line. Four players are shooting 80 percent or higher from the line and Archer leads the league with 30 makes from the free-throw line. On Nov. 24, the forward made 10 marking the most by a Red Storm player since Dec. 1, 2019.
Marist enters the game with a 2-4 record on the year and have dropped three straight contest. In its last time out, the Red Foxes fell on the road at Yale, 61-45.
Second Team All-MAAC selection Zaria Shazer leads the Red Foxes averaging 16.8 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. The senior has excelled on the defensive glass pulling down 7.9 defensive boards per outing, which ranks 12th in the country.
The two last met during the 2017-18 campaign in the opening round of the WNIT at Carnesecca Arena on March 15. The Johnnies captured a 68-47 wire-to-wire win in the postseason tilt and had five players finished in double-figures in scoring.
