St. John’s Readies for First Road Contest at Monmouth

Red Storm won its season opener in resounding fashion, 81-44, over LIU on Monday
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball team will hit the road for the first time during the 2023-24 campaign when it faces Monmouth on Friday night at 7 p.m.
The action from OceanFirst Bank Center will be streamed on FloSports with Eddy Occhipinti and Maria Marino on the call from West Long Branch, N.J.
The Red Storm began its season in dominant fashion on Monday night, stringing together a 25-2 run in the second quarter to blow past LIU, 81-44, at Carnesecca Arena.
St. John's matched its highest point total from last year's 23-9 campaign (81, at DePaul on Jan. 21, 2023) in its first contest on the heels of 50 percent shooting from the floor (28-56 FG) and 40 percent from beyond-the-arc (8-20 3FG).
Reigning BIG EAST Sixth-Woman of the Year Unique Drake exploded for a career-high 27 points on 9-of-15 (60%) shooting from the field. The guard's opening night point total is the highest of any BIG EAST Player during the first round of games this week.
The redshirt senior was lights out from downtown, sinking a career-best five 3-pointers. Drake currently ranks top-30 in the country in 3-pointers made per game in the first week of play. Over her last three contests dating back to last season, the Columbia, S.C., native has drilled nine triples.
Jillian Archer was a force inside the paint, starting off her second year in Queens with a double-double. The forward, who ranked eighth in the league in rebounding last year (7.7 rpg) pulled down a game-high 12 boards and scored 11 points on Monday night.
The Johnnies dished out 20 assists in the opener, matching their most since Nov. 10, 2022 in a win over St. Francis Brooklyn. Skye Owen led the squad in that category dishing out a career-high six. The rising sophomore additionally set personal bests in points (12), steals (4), rebounds (3) and minutes (26). UMass transfer Ber'Nyah Mayo provided a lift in the assist department, dishing out five in her Red Storm debut.
St. John's recorded 13 steals in the convincing victory over the Sharks, the program's most since it had 16 against Fairfield on Dec. 20, 2019. Along with Owen's team-best four, Jayda Brown and Jailah Donald each had three swipes. In her collegiate debut, Brown chipped in 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting off the bench.
Monmouth and St. John's met a year ago to open the campaign with the Johnnies doubling up on the Hawks, 78-39, inside Carnesecca Arena on Nov. 6, 2022. Kadaja Bailey poured in a game-high 23 points and a stifling Red Storm defense held the visitors to just a 27.9 field goal percentage and 12 percent from 3-point range.
Friday marks the eighth time the schools will faceoff on the hardwood and first time at Monmouth since Nov. 28, 2007. St. John's leads the all-time series, 7-0.

The reigning CAA Champions strung together a magical run in the conference tournament to returns to the "Big Dance" for the first time in 40 years. Monmouth defeated the top-three seeds in the CAA Tournament to claim the conference crown for the first time ever. Overall, the Hawks concluded the year with a 18-16 record.
The Hawks are led by Preseason All-CAA Honorable Mention selection Ariana Vanderhoop, who tallied 10.5 points and 5.3 boards per game last season.
