The Red Storm men’s basketball team carries a three-game win streak into its contest with the Pioneers
QUEENS, N.Y. – Fresh off a road victory at West Virginia, the St. John's men's basketball team looks to extend its winning streak to four games on Wednesday when the Johnnies host Sacred Heart (4-5) at Carnesecca Arena.
CBS Sports Network will carry the national telecast between St. John's (5-2) and the Pioneers with Tom McCarthy and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Jay Wright on the call from Queens. An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Vin Parise will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app. The radio broadcast can also be heard on SiriusXM channel 383 and the SiriusXM App.
The Johnnies rallied for a 79-73 victory over the Mountaineers in Morgantown, W. Va. on Friday as part of the BIG EAST – Big 12 Battle. Senior center Joel Soriano delivered a career-high 24 points to go with nine rebounds to help lift the Red Storm to its fifth victory in the last six games. Graduate students Chris Ledlum and Nahiem Alleyne also shined for St. John's in the win over West Virginia. Ledlum posted a double-double (17 points, 10 rebounds) while Alleyne scored 14 points off the bench, including a clutch 3-pointer from the corner with 20 seconds remaining.
St. John's returns to action in Queens for the first time since downing Holy Cross, 91-45, on Nov. 25. It marked the 27th-straight non-conference victory for the Johnnies at Carnesecca Arena, a stretch that began in 2019. The 27-game win streak against out of conference opponents in Queens is tied for the program's longest since setting the all-time record with 62 wins from Nov. 28, 1981 to Nov. 18, 1993. St. John's current stretch matched the 27-straight non-league victories at Carnesecca Arena from Dec. 21, 1996 to Feb. 2, 2003.
Home-court advantage has benefited St. John's in its two games inside Carnesecca Arena this season, scoring 90-plus points in a pair of sold-out victories over Stony Brook (90-74, Nov. 7) and against the Crusaders. The Red Storm is shooting 51.0 percent (73-143 FG) from the floor and 40.9 percent (18-44 3FG) from distance through two contests in Queens.
St. John's and Sacred Heart will square off for the fifth time in series history. All four of St. John's wins over the Pioneers have come at Carnesecca Arena.
The Red Storm will face Sacred Heart for the first time since Dec. 22, 2018, when the Johnnies cruised to a 104-82 victory. St. John's recorded a program-record 17 3-pointers as Marvin Clark II and Mustapha Heron combined for 11 triples while registering 23 points apiece.
The Pioneers, who were picked to win the Northeast Conference (NEC), enter Wednesday's contest looking to bounce back from three consecutive losses to Saint Joseph's (Nov. 26), New Hampshire (Nov. 30) and Boston University (Dec. 2). Despite the three setbacks, senior forward Nico Galette has been a spark for the Pioneers averaging 18.7 points and 7.7 rebounds during this stretch. The 2023 All-NEC First Team selection posted a career-high 27 points to go with 11 rebounds against New Hampshire.
Sacred Heart ranks 12th in Division I averaging 10.4 steals per game. The Pioneers are also ranked 37th in Division I with 5.1 blocks per game with senior forward Alex Sobel averaging 2.6 per contest (15th in NCAA). The senior center is also averaging 10.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.
After hosting Sacred Heart on Wednesday, the Red Storm travels to Brooklyn for a matchup with Boston College in the NABC Brooklyn Showcase. Tickets are available in the St. John's section by clicking here.
