St. John’s Cruises to an 85-50 Victory Over Sacred Heart

QUEENS, N.Y. – In front of its third straight sold-out crowd at Carnesecca Arena, the St. John's men's basketball team rolled past Sacred Heart, 85-50, on Wednesday for its fourth consecutive win.
The Red Storm's victory over the Pioneers marked the Johnnies' 28th-straight non-conference victory at Carnesecca Arena. It's now the second-longest streak in program history against out-of-conference opponents in Queens since winning a program record 62 consecutive games from Nov. 28, 1981 to Nov. 18, 1993.
Senior center Joel Soriano shined for St. John's (6-2) on Wednesday posting his fourth double-double of the season with game-highs of 18 points, 13 rebounds and six assists in just 24 minutes of action.
Jordan Dingle finished with 17 points shooting 7-for-11 from the field while backcourt mate Daniss Jenkins added 13 points, four steals and four assists. Dingle and Jenkins led the Red Storm with three 3-pointers apiece and combined for half of the team's total triples.
The Red Storm also dominated the glass by outrebounding Sacred Heart (4-6), 51-27. St. John's pulled down 22 offensive rebounds, including seven from Soriano, and registered 19 second chance points.
The Johnnies built a double-digit advantage early in the first half with a 10-0 run that was capped by back-to-back threes from Dingle and Brady Dunlap to go up 18-7 at 12:34. Soriano got going minutes later scoring 10-straight points to put St. John's up by 18 with a triple of his own at the 5:42 mark.
St. John's would eventually carry a 47-26 advantage into the break after Jenkins drained his third triple of the first half at the buzzer.
The Johnnies turned up the defensive pressure on the Pioneers in the second half to help build its largest lead of the game, 70-34, 11 minutes into the stanza. St. John's would maintain a 30-plus point advantage the rest of the way.
Eleven of the 12 players to see action for St. John's got in the scoring column. The Johnnies shot 46.3 percent (31-67 FG) from the field and 41.4 percent (12-29 3FG) from distance.
Drissa Traore recorded all five of his points in the second half, as the Red Storm's 6-foot-8 forward shot 2-for-3 from the field and drained a 3-pointer. Freshman guard Simeon Wilcher also recorded five points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals all coming over 13 minutes of action in the latter half.
Sacred Heart was led by Nico Galette posted 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals.
St. John's returns to action on Sunday against Boston College at Barclays Center in the NABC Brooklyn Showcase. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ESPNU will carry the national telecast.
