Pioneers of the Game Sue Bretthauer and Debbite “Dottie” Pace Giordano will be honored on-court
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball team will return to return to Carnesecca Arena after two consecutive road games to face Rhode Island on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
Joe Vasile and Sam Kuperman will be on the call from Queens for the final non-conference home contest on FloSports.
Sunday is "Pioneers of the Game" day as two legends of the St. John's women's basketball program will be recognized. The first-ever 1,000-point scorer Sue Bretthauer and first-ever scholarship player Debbie "Dottie" Pace Giordano will be honored on-court for their trailblazing accomplishments.
The first 200 fans will receive a free soft pretzel from Philadelphia Pretzel Factory.
St. John's will look to get back on track after a late fourth quarter surge fell short on Thursday night at Fairfield, 67-62. The Red Storm outscored the Stags 24-15 in the final quarter and ended the game on a 12-3 scoring run inside Leo D. Mahoney Arena.
For the fifth time this season, Unique Drake exceeded the 20-point threshold pouring in 21 in Thursday's loss. The redshirt senior went 7-for-10 from the charity stripe and matched a career-high with three steals. On the year, Drake is averaging 19.8 points per game, which top-3 in the league. Prior to Sunday's matchup, Drake will be honored for becoming the 29th player in program history to reach the 1,000-career point mark.
Jayda Brown provided an energetic lift off the bench on Thursday chipping in 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting in less than 14 minutes of action. The double-figure scoring performance marked the second of the freshman's budding career after adding 11 in her collegiate debut on Nov. 6.
The Johnnies have excelled on the comfort of their home floor logging a 17-3 record over its last 20 contests inside Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm are 3-1 in Queens this season and are holding opponents to just 51.5 points per game at home.
Rhode Island heads to Queens with a 6-4 overall mark on the season. In its last appearance the Rams took on in-state rival and BIG EAST foe Providence and narrowly fell in a low-scoring affair, 51-50. In the game prior, URI outlasted No. 25 Princeton at home for the program's first-ever win over a nationally-ranked opponent.
URI is led offensively by a balanced attack with three players- Maye Toure, Sophie Phillips and Teisha Hyman averaging double-figures in scoring. Rams center Tenin Magassa ranks top-15 nationally averaging 2.6 blocks per game.
Last year, the Rams captured their first-ever Atlantic 10 Regular Season Championship and finished the year with a WNIT Super 16 appearance and a 26-7 overall mark under Head Coach Tammi Reiss.
Sunday's meeting represents the 13th all-time between the two programs and the first since 2010. The Red Storm lead the all-time series, 8-4, and are 5-0 in games played in Queens.
After this, the Johnnies will prepare for conference play as they take on Villanova at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 16 at 6 p.m.
