Mimi Reid poured in a career-high 23 points on Wednesday night
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball team suffered a setback to No. 14/15 Villanova, falling 73-57, in Carnesecca Arena.
The Wildcats stretched their lead in the second half to take home a victory fueled by a game-high 39 points from the nation's leading scorer Maddy Siegrist.
Mimi Reid logged a stellar performance going for a career-high 23 points on Wednesday night, surpassing her previous mark of 21 that she set almost three years ago at Ole Miss. The point guard set another career-high with nine made free-throws, going 9-for-10 from the charity stripe.
Jillian Archer finished the night with seven points and eight rebounds. Danielle Patterson and Kadaja Bailey also concluded the outing with seven points. Bailey recorded a team-high four assists and two steals.
The contest started slow offensively, as two top scoring defenses in the league made it difficult for one another. The St. John's defense forced four turnovers in the first few minutes of action. Villanova ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to make it, 12-9, after 10 minutes.
In the second frame, Villanova developed a slight edge but the Red Storm stayed within striking distance. Reid absorbed contact on a drive to the hole and sunk the free-throw for a 3-point play to make it a five-point game, 29-24, heading into halftime.
Early in the third quarter, Reid drilled a triple on a short pass from Bailey before Villanova (23-4, 14-2 BIG EAST) ripped off a 12-2 run to take its largest lead of the night, 46-29.
Down 15 heading into the final stanza, the Red Storm climbed back into it with a 5-0 run at the start of the fourth. A made basket from Bailey forced a Villanova timeout. The Johnnies cut the deficit to as few as eight after a Patterson triple but were unable to inch any closer. The Wildcats ended the game on a 7-0 run, with Siegrist logging a fast break lay-up to close out her 39-point performance, that included 28 second half points.
The Red Storm will travel to Milwaukee for a meeting with Marquette on Saturday. Tip-off from the Al McGuire Center is scheduled for 3 p.m. St. John's captured a win in the first meeting between the two, 66-61, in Queens.
