St. John's Travels to Georgia for Five Games in Three Days

The Red Storm will play Charlotte, No.13 Georgia and No. 19 Stanford
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 16, 2023) – The St. John's softball team continue is grinding schedule with five games in third days for the second weekend in a row. This weekend the squad travels to Athens, Ga. for contests against Charlotte, No. 13 Georgia and No. 19 Stanford.
The Red Storm will start the weekend with a 10:30 a.m. bout with Charlotte before taking on the host school, No. 13 Georgia at 6 p.m. Saturday afternoon, the Johnnies will face Georgia and Charlotte in a back-to-back doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m. St. John's will close the weekend with a 10 a.m. game against No. 19 Stanford.
All games will have LiveStats available through sidearm sports, located on RedStormSports.com. Both games against Georgia will be streamed on SEC Network+.
St. John's opened the season by scoring three runs in the top half of the first inning against No.2o Kentucky. The Wildcats responded and took the victory. The Johnnies would drop the second game of the day against No. 21 Auburn, 6-0. After being edged by South Alabama 5-3 in the final inning, the Red Storm would take a 1-0 lead in the nightcap against No. 8 Northwestern, which was canceled after two innings due to rain.
In the final game of the trip, the Red Storm used a fantastic day by freshman Katie Whittaker to notch an 8-0 victory against Southern. Whittaker hit a grand slam in the third inning to give the Johnnies a 5-0 lead. With the lead, 6-0, the San Marcos, Calif. Native belted a solo home run to add an insurance run for the Johnnies. Whittaker's day of two home runs, and 5 RBIs, propelled her to being named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week in the first week of the season. Sophomore Carolina Zamudio dealt a gem in the circle, throwing a complete game shutout with eight strikeouts against the Jaguars.
Charlotte earned three wins in four games last weekend in North Carolina. The 49ers knocked off South Carolina, Miami (OH) and ETSU. The only blemish on the week was a loss in a marathon game against Campbell, 6-1 in 12 innings. In its last game of the weekend, the 49ers trailed ETSU 1-0 in the sixth before exploding with eight runs to take control of the game and earn the victory.
Kassidy Krupit earned CUSA Player of the Week with two homers and 10 RBIs over the weekend. In the circle, freshman Lena Elkins touts a 0.00 ERA after holding Campbell to three hits in five innings of work. Sam Gress allowed one run on nine hits in just under 10 innings of work combined against Campbell and Miami. Head Coach Ashley Chastain is 83-56 in her fourth season with Charlotte. She guided the 49ers to a 35-23 record in 2022.
These will be the first two games between the two programs.
Georgia opened the season with five wins, including a 4-2 victory over No. 18 UCF. The Bulldogs outscored their opponents 54-14 across the five games.
Junior Jayda Kearney started the season hot roping four home runs, seven hits, 10 RBIs while hitting at a .462 clip. In the circle, Shelby Walters has tallied three wins to start the season. In four games she has notched 13 strikeouts and allowed just five hits with an ERA of 2.33. Kylie Macy pitched five innings with eight strikeouts with a perfect 0.00 ERA.
Tony Baldwin is in his second season at the helm of the Bulldogs program. In the first season, he carried a 43-18 record and took the team to its 20th consecutive NCAA Tournament. Last season, Georgia fell to No. 12 Duke in the seventh game of the Durham Regional and finished 22nd in the final Top 25.
Georgia has won all six contests against the Red Storm. The Bulldogs won 10-1 in 2019 against the Johnnies.
No. 19 Stanford faced stiff competition in its first weekend of play culminating in three wins and a pair of losses to ranked teams. The Cardinal grabbed wins against Loyola Marymount, San Jose State, Liberty. Stanford fell to No.1 Oklahoma in five innings, and No.16/19 Duke.
In a 8-0 rout of Liberty, freshman NiJaree Canady threw a no-hitter recording 10 strikeouts while allowing just three Flames to reach base. It was the hurler's second win of the season. River Mahler started the season with a hot weekend recording 10 hits in 13 at bats to hit at a team-high .769 clip. Aly Kaneshiro leads the team with a pair of home runs. Alana Vawter logged 13 innings in the circle claiming one win and one loss on the weekend. The senior struck out 12 and only walked one batter. Vawter was selected to the Pac-12 Preseason team.
In the Pac-12 Preseason Poll, the Cardinal were picked to finish in second behind UCLA. Head Coach Jessica Allister owns a 154-101 record in her sixth season with Stanford.
Stanford has won both of the previous meetings against St. John's. The Cardinal won the most recent matchup, 10-4, in 2017.
St. John's will be back in action next week with another five-game trip to Virginia.
