St. John’s Falls to Charlotte, 1-0, Game against Georgia postponed until Sunday

The Red Storm allowed two hits to Charlotte in the pitcher’s duel
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 17, 2023) – The St. John's softball team fell to Charlotte, 1-0, at Jack Turner Field in Athens, Ga in the Red and Black Showcase. The second game of the day against No.13 Georgia was postponed due to cold temperatures.
Game 1
With a combined two hits in the game, the contest was the definition of a pitcher's duel. Red Storm's Carolina Zamudio tossed seven innings, registered four strikeouts, and only allowed one run on two hits.
Freshman Katie Whittaker picked up where she left off, reaching base in her first two plate appearances on a hit by pitch, and a walk. She increased her on-base streak to three games.
Whittaker led off the second inning with a hit-by-pitch, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Peyton Cody advanced her to third with two outs, where she was stranded to end the inning.
Zamudio only allowed two base runners through the first three innings, on one walk and one hit. In the fourth inning, she would retire the first two hitters before allowing a 49ers home run to break the scoreless tie.
The Red Storm threatened in the fifth inning after a lead-off walk by Natalie Alheidt. After a sacrifice bunt, and groundout moved her to third base with two outs, she was stranded at third to end the inning.
In the final two innings the sophomore forced Charlotte to six up-six down. She would get two 49er batters to go down swinging in the final innings.
The Red Storm offense was shut down in the final two innings, going 1-2-3 in both the sixth and seventh.
Game 2
The second game against No. 13 Georgia was postponed due to expected cold temperatures. The Red Storm will now take on the Bulldogs in part of a doubleheader on Sunday. The Johnnies will face No. 19 Stanford at 10 a.m., and then face No. 13 Georgia at 12:30 p.m.
St. John's will continue in the Red and Black Showcase with a doubleheader against No. 13 Georgia and Charlotte tomorrow. The Red Storm will open with the Bulldogs at 3:30 p.m. before the nightcap against the 49ers.
