London Jarrard crushed a pair of homers in the first game of the day
Game 1
London Jarrard became the second Johnnie on the season to record a five-RBI, two home run game. The sophomore hit an absolute moonshot three-run home early in the game, before belting a two-run shot in the seventh inning.
The Red Storm struck first in the second inning on a RBI single by Natalie Alheidt. Alheidt drove in Katie Whittaker after she led off the inning with a walk on eight pitches, to extend her on-base streak to four games.
Ana Serafinko started strong allowing just two base runners in the first two innings. In the third, Georgia was able to gain traction on the bases. With two runners in scoring position, the Bulldogs grounded back to Serafinko, who made a great play to get the lead runner and prevented the run from scoring. Later in the inning, the Bulldogs loaded the bases with two outs, when a full-count walk scored the first run for Georgia. The next batter, Sydney Kuma, cleared the bases on an RBI double, and crossed the plate on a single to cap the five-run inning.
In the fourth inning, Georgia kept the momentum and tacked on two more runs on a Sara Mosley home run, to extend the lead for the Bulldogs to 7-1. That ended the night for Serafinko and Loreley Francia was summoned out of the bullpen.
St. John's showed they weren't giving up easily, and scored three runs in the top of the fifth. After Sydney Totarsky and Cassidy Stouffer reached base on a hit by pitch and walk, Jarrard crushed a monster home run to cut the Georgia lead in half.
Georgia would add two more runs in the bottom half of the fifth with Mosley's second home run of the day.
Both the Red Storm and Bulldogs would go scoreless in the sixth. The Johnnies started off the seventh inning with hope, as Peyton Cody led off the seventh with a pinch-hit homer to left field. The Johnnies would not stop there with Jarrard crushing her second home run of the day, this time a two-run shot, to cut the lead to 9-7. This would force Georgia to go to their bullpen. The Bulldog reliever shut the door on the Red Storm to clinch the 9-7 victory.
Game 2
The 49ers offense broke through quicker than the day before tallying four runs in the first three innings. After three consecutive hits to leadoff the game, Hannah Mearns was able to limit the damage and only allow two to cross the plate. After two runs in the third inning, Carolina Zamudio entered the game with one out and two runners in scoring position. Zamudio forced a groundout and strikeout to escape further damage. Zamudio would only allow one more 49ers run on a London Dirks home run.
The Red Storm put a run on the board in the fifth inning. Melanie Santos led off inning with a double, and advanced to third on a Amy Mallah single. After Natalie Alheidt was hit by a pitch to load the bases, the 49ers resorted to their bullpen. With one out, pinch-hitter Maeve Marra would record her first collegiate hit and RBI on a seeing-eye single to plate Santos. Charlotte was able to limit the damage and shut the door on the potential Johnnies rally.
With two outs in the seventh, the Red Storm threatened with two outs on back-to-back singles by Totarsky and Marra for her second hit of the game. The Johnnies were unable to capitalize, and fell to Charlotte, 5-1.
St. John's will continue in the Red and Black Showcase with a doubleheader against No. 13 Georgia and Charlotte tomorrow. The Red Storm will open with the Bulldogs at 3:30 p.m. before the nightcap against the 49ers.
