Aaron Mann and David Glancy produce multi-hit games while Jackson Tucker sees reached-base streak jump to 21 games
First baseman Aaron Mann rattled off a 3-for-4 day at the dish with one tally while outfielder David Glancy also produced a multi-hit performance, smacking a pair of singles and driving in one run.
Sophomore Jackson Tucker extended his reached-base streak to 21 games with a single in the first inning, matching the longest stretch of his collegiate career. The Staten Island native finished the afternoon going 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and two runs scored.
The Red Storm (1-1) had opportunities in almost every inning as its leadoff batter reached base safely in seven of nine frames.
The Johnnies opened the scoring on a Tate Ballestero RBI single, bringing Tucker around to score in the first inning, 1-0. The Monarchs tied the game in the home half, capitalizing on a walk and a Red Storm fielding error to plate one run on an RBI groundout.
Old Dominion (1-1) went on to score four more unanswered runs over the next two innings, taking a 5-1 lead into the fourth.
Harford Community College transfer Blake Mayberry recorded his first start with the Johnnies on Saturday, driving in Mann from third on an RBI groundout in the top of the fourth, 5-2.
Tommy Finnegan made his NCAA debut in the bottom half of the fourth, relieving Mascio and dominating the opposition in his first two innings of work. The Ocean City, N.J., native retired all six batters he faced and struck out one through the fourth and fifth frames.
St. John's added another run in the top of the fifth as Orbon was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Glancy ripped a single through the right side, driving in the Red Storm right fielder and slashing the lead to two, 5-3.
Following a blank frame for the Johnnies, the Monarchs tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, seeing their advantage jump to 7-3 on a double steal and an RBI double from Tyler Wheeler.
The four-run lead was quickly slashed in half, 7-5, after Paul Orbon slapped a pinch-hit single to left to start the seventh inning. Following a walk to Tucker and a catcher's interference allowed Glancy to load the bases, Ballestero drew four-straight balls to walk in a run. Tucker went on to cross home plate in the ensuing Monarchs' twin killing to pull within two.
After a blank eighth, Old Dominion's Robert Cook picked up a three-inning save and closed the door in the ninth to take game two from the Red Storm. Ben Moore earned the victory with his 1.2 innings of work out of the pen, allowing just two hits and one unearned run.
Jack Ticer and Alex Bouche led the Monarchs with two RBIs while seven different players touched home plate on Saturday.
The Johnnies will look to close out the series against Old Dominion on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. Freshman Mario Pesca will toe the slab opposite Dylan Brown in Sunday's contest.
