Aaron Mann finishes the weekend batting .500 with three runs and two RBIs
NEW YORK – The St. John's baseball team battled against Old Dominion before falling on the road, 10-5, on Sunday.
Aaron Mann put forth a solid 2-for-3 performance on Sunday, adding a pair of walks and scoring twice. The Drury transfer finished the weekend batting .500 (6-for-12) with three runs and two RBIs
Sophomore Jace Jeremiah drove in a pair of runs on Sunday while Marty Higgins logged his first multi-hit game of the season with two singles and a tally.
Freshman Jimmy Keenan belted a home run in his first collegiate at-bat, coming on as a pinch hitter in the ninth.
After Old Dominion (2-1) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on a Jake Ticer three-run homer, Jeremiah knocked in St. John's (1-2) first run of the game with an RBI groundout, bringing Mann around to score and slashing the Monarchs' lead to two, 3-1.
Both teams were held off the board until Old Dominion tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a double down the left-field line. However, the Johnnies' relay of Ben Beauchamp, Jeremiah and Tate Ballestero prevented a third run from scoring, ending the inning trailing by four, 5-1.
The Red Storm chipped away at the Monarchs' lead in the fourth, bringing the visitors within two, 5-3. After Higgins scored on a muffed throw, David Glancy knocked in his fifth run of the weekend on double to left, plating Tucker, who reached on the error, for the Johnnies' third run of the game.
Following a 1-2-3 inning from Dylan Johnson in the fifth, the Johnnies added another run, 5-4, on a Jeremiah RBI single to left-center, knocking in Mann from second.
Johnson worked himself in and out of trouble in the fifth, loading the bases and forcing a 4-6-3 double play to keep the deficit at one. The Selden, N.Y., native also tossed a scoreless bottom of the sixth, going three-straight innings without allowing a run.
The Monarchs scored five unanswered runs over its final two offensive innings to take a 10-4 lead through eight. Keenan belted a pinch-hit solo shot in the top of the ninth before falling to the Monarchs by five.
Old Dominion's Ticer recorded three home runs and five RBIs on the afternoon. Robbie O'Neal and Kyle Edwards also tallied two RBIs apiece on Sunday.
The Red Storm will head down to Louisiana next week, facing Tulane in a three-game set beginning on Friday.
