The Red Storm plates three in final inning to take down the Green Wave
NEW YORK – Trailing by two heading into the final frame, the St. John's baseball team erased the late deficit with a three-run ninth inning to take down Tulane, 6-5, at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium on Friday evening.
First baseman Aaron Mann led the charge with a 3-for-4 night at the dish with two RBIs, falling a triple shy of the cycle and marking his third-straight game with two or more base knocks. The Drury transfer led off the ninth with a double down the first-base line before an Austin Machado single brought him around to score and cut the Green Wave's lead down to one, 5-4.
After pinch runner Anthony Brienza moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch, Tulane (0-5) caught the Johnnies in a pickle between third and home with Brayden Marrow tagging Brienza mid-slide. However, upon review, the Green Wave's third baseman lost the ball while going to the ground and Brienza was deemed safe to tie the game at five. Left fielder Paul Orbon delivered his second game-winning base knock in as many Fridays, roping a single to left and plating Jace Jeremiah from third for a 6-5 Johnnies' lead.
Sophomore Jackson Tucker also saw his reached-base streak reach 23 games with a pair of walks on Friday night, adding a tally to his final line. Despite allowing two runs, Sonny Fauci tossed 3.1 innings of hitless baseball and struck out four of the 14 batters he faced on Friday.
The Green Wave broke through in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by Brennan Lambert to take a 1-0 lead.
Following a blank second inning, St. John's (2-2) found themselves in trouble in the bottom of the third, putting two runners on base with no outs. Fauci locked in and forced three straight outs, stranding both Tulane players in scoring position.
St. John's took its first lead of the game in the top of the fourth. After a Kevin Michaels' two-out double to center, Mann smashed a two-run shot to left-center on a 1-2 pitch from the Green Wave's Dylan Carmouche, giving the Johnnies a 2-1 edge.
Tulane's Teo Banks tied the game at two in the home half of the fourth frame on an RBI single to right-center, bringing Brady Marget around to score from second. The Green Wave bumped its lead to 4-2 in the fifth inning after Lambert hit a two-run ground-rule double to right-center.
Tim Cunningham came on in relief and stifled the Tulane lineup through the sixth and seventh innings. The Red Storm right-hander punched out three of the seven batters he faced, allowing just one walk in two frames of work.
The Red Storm chipped away at the Green Wave's advantage in the top of the eighth as Tucker walked and David Glancy moved him to third on a one-out double. With two runners in scoring position, Tate Ballestero plated Tucker on a shallow sacrifice fly to left and slashed the Johnnies' deficit to one, 4-3.
The Green Wave quickly reclaimed a two-run edge, 5-3, in the bottom half of the frame on a solo homer from Marget.
However, St. John's did not go down quietly in the final frame, scoring three runs on three hits for a 6-5 lead before Chuck Sanzio tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to shut the door for his first save of the season.
The Red Storm held Tulane to a 2-for-12 showing with runners in scoring position and stranded six on base.
The Johnnies will return to action against the Green Wave on Saturday with first pitch slated for 7 p.m. from Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
