Red Storm uses three-homer, nine-run fourth inning to knock off the Lions on Monday
Tate Ballestero and Marty Higgins smashed back-to-back jacks for the first time since David Glancy and Justin Folz did it on the same date in 2021 against UMass Lowell. Ballestero finished the game going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Higgins smacked two hits of his own, logging a tally and two knock-ins of his own.
Glancy provided the biggest hit of the night with a three-run homer to break the game open, part of a two-hit night for the redshirt junior. Aaron Mann put forth a 3-for-5 showing against the Lions, driving in two and scoring a pair.
Jackson Tucker continued to find his way on base, reaching base safely for the 26th-straight game with a single, recording two runs and an RBI in Hammond.
Reliever Jake Alfaro stifled the Lions' lineup through his near-perfect 2.1 innings of work, allowing just one hit and striking out three late in the game.
Starter Xavier Kolhosser made his Red Storm debut after missing his first season due to Tommy John surgery. The Wappinger Falls, N.Y., native tossed 24 pitches in two innings of work and also struck out three of the seven batters he faced.
All nine starters factored in the team's scoring with eight players crossing home plate with six Johnnies driving in at least one run. Four of those six tallied two or more RBIs on Monday.
Southeastern Louisiana (7-2) entered the game as the third-leading scoring team in the nation at 12.0 runs per game. The Lions quickly proved that by jumping out to an early 2-0 lead on an RBI single from Tyler Finke and a Shea Thomas one-run double in the third.
After three blank innings for the Red Storm, Ballestero jumpstarted the nine-run explosion in the top of the fourth. The Johnnies' designated hitter deadlocked the game at two with a two-run shot before Higgins drilled a solo shot to right, concluding an 11-pitch exchange against Lions' starter Jay Long for a 3-2 edge. Four batters later, Tucker dropped down an RBI bunt single to plate Jace Jeremiah and set up Glancy's three-run homer to left-center, pushing the Red Storm lead to five, 7-2. Higgins and Jimmy Keenan rounded out the nine-run frame with back-to-back RBI singles to take a 9-2 edge.
St. John's continued to pour it on in the fifth, scoring three more runs for a double-digit edge, 12-2. Mann laced a two-run single to right before a sacrifice fly from Ballestero brought Michaels in from third for the 10-run advantage.
The Lions ended the Red Storm's 12-0 spree with an RBI double from Jake Killingsworth in the home half of the fifth, cutting their deficit to nine, 12-3. Despite giving up the run, Tommy Finnegan stranded two runners on base with a strikeout to end the inning.
Southern Louisiana slashed the Johnnies' lead to five, 12-7, with four runs in the sixth. Reliever Alfaro halted the Lions' bases-loaded threat by getting Champ Artigues to ground out to second to end the frame. The sophomore hurler also tossed a perfect seventh inning and a scoreless eighth.
Closer Chuck Sanzio came on in the ninth to preserve the lead and struck out Rhett Rosevear for the final out to take down the Lions by five.
The Johnnies will wrap up its 10-game road stretch to open the 2023 slate this weekend when they head to Huntington, W. Va., to take on Marshall. The three-game series is slated to begin on Friday with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
