Red Storm earns third sweep in last four matches
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 5, 2023)- The St. John's women's tennis team continued their four-match winning streak with a 7-0 sweep at Monmouth on Sunday evening at Little Silver Racket Club.
In the last four matches, the Red Storm (4-3) have won all four, with three via a sweep.
Four the fourth consecutive match, the Red Storm earned the doubles point, claiming victories in all three matches. With the absence of Jayden Nielsen in the lineup, coach Lauren Leo switched up the pairings at no.1 and no.2 doubles. In their first match of the season together, Mouna Bouzgarrou and Lalita Devarakonda earned a 6-4 win in the no. 1 slot against Lauren Landstrom and Ann Spurka. The no. 2 slot also featured a new pair of Johnnies with Yesica de Lucas and Emilie Haakansson picking up a victory against Zoe Klapman and Hana McKinney, 6-4. Camila Ordonez and Willa Bay Breunich completed the three-match sweep in doubles play defeating Lenien Jamir and Madison Mills, 6-2.
In singles play, five Johnnies earned their second win of the day. Improving her singles record to 6-1, de Lucas won in straight sets 6-1, 6-,2 against McKinney. Breunich picked up her fifth singles win of the season with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Lana Brezanin. In no. 1 doubles, Devarakonda only dropped two games to win 6-1, 6-1 against Spurka. Bouzgarrou defeated Landstrom, 6-2, 7-5 to pick up her third singles win of the season, matching Devarakonda. Ordonez was the last Johnnie to earn two wins on the day with a 7-6 (5), and 6-1 win against Klapman.
St. John's will be back in action with a midweek match on Wednesday before enjoying a weekend off. The Red Storm will host St. Francis Brooklyn at 1 p.m. at USTA Tennis Center.
