Posh Alexander leads the Red Storm with a season-high 17 points on Tuesday at Hinkle Fieldhouse
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Posh Alexander led the Red Storm with a season-high 17 points, but the St. John's men's basketball team couldn't hold off a late Butler rally, falling 68-66 on Tuesday at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
St. John's (14-11, 4-10 BIG EAST) had a chance to send the game to overtime on the final play of the contest, but Joel Soriano's bucket at the buzzer was waved off after an official review confirmed it was a split second too late.
Alexander added nine rebounds and six assists to his stat line. Soriano registered his 19th double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Rafael Pinzon gave the Johnnies a spark off the bench, scoring 14 of the team's 20 bench points on a 6-for-10 shooting with two 3-pointers.
Jayden Taylor led four Bulldogs in double-figures with 19 points, shooting 6-for-12 from the field. Manny Bates contributed 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and three blocks to help Butler (12-13, 4-10 BIG EAST) split the regular-season series with the Johnnies.
Alexander carried the Red Storm in the opening half, hitting 5-of-6 field goal attempts for 10 points to send St. John's into the break with a 41-34 advantage. As a team, St. John's converted 54.5 percent (18-33 FG) of its field goal attempts and buried four 3-pointers in the first half.
O'Mar Stanley tallied four of his six points to open the second stanza before a steal and breakaway layup by Alexander gave the Johnnies a double-digit lead, 47-37, with 17:06 left.
From there, the Johnnies cooled off while Taylor, Jalen Thomas and Simas Lukosius got going for the Bulldogs, as the trio scored 29 of the team's 34 second half points.
After Soriano put St. John's up 66-61 with a dunk at the 3:50 mark, Butler closed the contest on a 7-0 run. Bates converted a 3-point play to get within two followed by a pair of free-throws by Taylor to knot it at 66-66 with 2:19 on the clock. Lukosius then notched the decisive bucket with 1:31 remaining.
Lukosius couldn't seal the game at the free-throw line, missing a pair with five seconds remaining. However, the Red Storm was not able to capitalize on two opportunities in the closing seconds.
St. John's will return to action on Saturday at Madison Square Garden. The Red Storm hosts No. 20/17 Providence at 12 p.m. on FOX.
