The Red Storm Secures First BIG EAST Series Win of the Season
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 12, 2023) – The St. John's softball team came from behind to win its first BIG EAST series of the season on a walk-off by Cassidy Stouffer to take a 2-1 victory against Providence on Sunday afternoon at Red Storm Field.
Carolina Zamudio earned her sixth win of the season notching her sixth complete game. The Mexico City native allowed just two hits while striking out seven.
London Jarrard collected three of the Johnnies six hits in the contest. The 2022 All-BIG EAST selection, was just a home run shy of the cycle after smacking a double and a triple in her first two at-bats.
Providence got on the board first posting one run in the opening inning. After a single by the second batter, the Friars plated the first run of the ballgame on a single accompanied by a Red Storm error in the outfield.
In the bottom half, the Red Storm threatened with two runners on and no outs. After a deep fly ball by Peyton Cody to put both runners in scoring position, Friars starter, Tori Grifone, retired the last two batters on the end to escape the jam.
Zamudio found her groove and retired ten consecutive Friars starting in the last out of the second inning.
Trailing 1-0, the Red Storm pushed a run across in the fifth inning on a Jarrard RBI single. Amy Mallah led off, the inning, lacing a single down the left field line. Madison Wallace replaced Mallah on third with one out when Jarrard roped a single off the center field fence to plate Wallace.
Elysia Cunnigan replaced starter Grifone in the sixth inning and both pitchers continued to duel until the bottom of the seventh.
In the seventh inning, Mallah reached via a walk with one out in the frame. With two outs and Jarrard at the dish, Mallah advanced to third on a passed ball. Jarrard was walked and ran to second on the attempt to get Mallah the opportunity to score. Jarrard coasted into second setting up two runners in scoring position for pinch hitter Cassidy Stouffer. Stouffer ripped the first pitch she saw over the shortstop's head into left field to score Mallah and send the Red Storm bench into pandemonium, clinching the 2-1 game three and series victory for the Johnnies.
St. John's will return to action to host Monmouth for a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m at Red Storm Field.
