Women’s Tennis Continues BIG EAST Play with Pair of Weekend Matches

The Red Storm will host UConn Friday before traveling to Georgetown on Sunday
QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team continues BIG EAST play with a pair of matches this weekend against conference foes UConn, and Georgetown. The Red Storm will host UConn on Friday at 12:15 p.m. at the USTA Tennis Center before traveling to Georgetown on Sunday at 12 p.m.
Lalita Devarakonda was selected as the BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week for the second time this season. The graduate student notched her seventh win of the season in the top slot for the Johnnies with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Providence's Katie Mulvey on Saturday. She also logs a combined six doubles wins across three different partners. The Hyperabad, India native has also earned a pair of doubles team of the week honors, with Mouna Bouzgarrou, both time.
The Red Storm improved to 2-0 in the BIG EAST with a 6-1 victory against Providence on Saturday at USTA Tennis Center. Three Johnnies notched a pair of wins, with all five singles wins coming in straight sets. St. John's is now 16-0 against the Friars in program history.
In doubles play, Jayden Nielsen returned last week to partner with Yesica de Lucas to gather the duo's co-leading fifth win of the season. Willa Bay Breunich and Camila Ordonez are the second tandem with five wins, entering the weekend, 5-4.
In singles play, de Lucas leads the way with an 12-2 overall record. Breunich's 8-3 overall record is the second-best on the team. Three Johnnies have posted six wins on the season. Lopez touts a 7-4 record, while Bouzgarrou and Devarakonda are 7-5 on the season.
Head Coach Lauren Leo earned her 100th career-win at the helm of the St. John's Red Storm against Villanova on Feb. 24. Leo is the second head coach in program history to reach the milestone. Sheila Wildermuth owns the program record with 149 total wins in her 10-season career with the Red Storm from 1974-1984.
UConn enters the weekend 1-1 in the conference and 7-4 overall this season. The Huskies kicked off conference play with a 5-2 victory against Providence and fell to Creighton to even its conference record this season. UConn ended February on a five game win streak and are 1-2 in the month of March.
The Red Storm lead the all-time series with the Huskies, 12-0. Last year, the Red Storm won both matches against UConn including a 4-0 sweep in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament.
Georgetown enters the weekend 8-6, 1-2, and will open the weekend against Seton Hall on Saturday. The Hoyas knocked off Marquette for its first conference win of the season. Last weekend, Georgetown fell to DePaul, 4-2. Olivia Ashton and Agata Mikos each have earned four wins this season.
St. John's is 13-0 against the Hoyas in both programs' history. Last spring was the first meeting between the two schools' since 2019 and the Johnnies came out victorious, 6-1.
The Red Storm will be back in action next week with back-to-back matches starting on Friday. The Johnnies will host Hofstra at 2:15 p.m. at the USTA Tennis Center before traveling to Stony Brook for a 12 p.m. match on Sunday.
