Women’s Tennis Strings Together Third Consecutive BIG EAST Win

The Red Storm will travel to Georgetown on Sunday
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 24, 2023) - The St. John's women's tennis team won its third BIG EAST match with a 6-1 defeat of UConn on Friday afternoon at the USTA Tennis Center.
The Red Storm (9-6, 3-0) improved its all-time series perfect record against the Huskies to 13-0.
The Johnnies established its dominance early in doubles play, winning the first two matches to clinch the point. Yesica de Lucas and Jayden Nielsen teamed up for a 6-0 win against Olivia Wright and Maria Constantinou. The duo notched their team-best sixth win of the season. Mouna Bouzgarrou and Emilie Haakansson clinched the point on a 7-5 victory over Isabel Petri Bere and Denise Lai, their fifth of the season.
In singles play, three Johnnies earned their second win of the day. de Lucas improved to a team-high 13 wins with a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Constantinou in the second slot. Haakansson and Bouzgarrou needed three sets to complete the defeat of Petri Bere, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8. Camila Ordonez also needed three sets to finalize her victory over Lai, 6-0, 6-7 (7-3), 10-4. In No. 1 singles pairing, Lalita Devarakonda won on retired after Wright was unable to continue with the match tied at four in the first set.
St. John's will finish the week at Georgetown for a Sunday match starting at noon. The Red Storm will be back in action next week with back-to-back matches starting on Friday. The Johnnies will host Hofstra at 2:15 p.m. at the USTA Tennis Center before traveling to Stony Brook for a 12 p.m. match on Sunday.
