Men’s Tennis Opens BIG EAST Slate with 5-2 Win Against Georgetown

The Red Storm will finish the weekend with a road match at Brown
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team cruised to a 5-2 victory against Georgetown at the Courts at St. John's on Friday afternoon.
The Red Storm (12-4, 1-0 BIG EAST) won its first conference game of the season for the tenth consecutive season. The contest was the first match on campus of the 2023 spring season.
The Johnnies got on the board early winning the double point, yet again. Adam Groves and Ryota Kaneda teamed up for their team-leading fifth win of the season in doubles play. The duo knocked off Adhvyte Sharma and Derek Raskopf, 6-2. The tandem of Nishant Dabas and Carl Gustafsson clinched the point with a 6-2 win against Jake Fellows and Arthur O'Sullivan.
In singles play, the Johnnies grabbed four of the six wins to win the match, 5-2. Two Johnnies notched their second win of the day with the win in singles. Gustafsson was victorious, 7-6, (7-2), 6-3 against O'Sullivan. Kaneda also won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0 over Akira Morgenstern. Both Gustafsson and Kaneda earned their eighth wins of the season. In the top pairing Diogo Marques cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Kieran Foster. In the No. 2 slot, Sergio Molina logged his eleventh win of the season with a three set win over Fellows.
St. John's will be busy next week with a trio of matches. The Johnnies will start the week hosting Villanova on Wednesday. Over the weekend, the Red Storm will travel to Yale on Friday before hosting St. Francis Brooklyn on Sunday.
