Men’s Tennis to Open BIG EAST Slate on Friday

The Red Storm hosts Georgetown on Friday and will travel to Brown on Sunday
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team will open BIG EAST play on Friday hosting Georgetown at 12:15 p.m. at the USTA Tennis Center. On Sunday, the Johnnies will embark to Brown for a Sunday matinee match with a 1 p.m. start.
Last week, the Red Storm's only match was canceled to due inclement weather causing unplayable conditions on match day.
Two weeks ago, St. John's won a pair of 6-1 matches, against Siena and Drexel on back-to-back days. Diogo Marques picked up four wins across both days earning wins each day in singles and doubles. Marques teamed up with Axel Vila Antuna to be the only duo to win both doubles matches this weekend. In singles play Carl Gustafsson and Ryota Kaneda turned in stellar outings each earning two wins in as many tries this weekend.
In doubles play, the Johnnies have experimented with 17 different pairings this season. The duo of Adam Groves and Kaneda have played the most matches together and their five wins are the most on the team. Giuseppe De Camelis touts a combined 8-0 record in doubles play across four different partners, the most individual wins in doubles play. Four pairing have gathered a trio of wins for the Red Storm. De Camelis accounts for the two of the pairs as he is 3-0 teamed up with each Sergio Molina, and Anton Stendal. Two duos of Johnnies are 3-1 on the season, Gustafsson and Stendal and the pairing of Marques and Antuna.
In singles play, a pair of newcomers have been at the top for the Johnnies. New Mexico transfer Molina leads the team with 10 victories. Freshman Nishant Dabas holds a 9-2 record so far this season. Kaneda's eight wins is the third most and Gustafsson has added seven.
Head Coach Dillon Pottish is in his fifth season at the helm of the program. During his time with the Johnnies he has accumulated a 76-20 record. He has guided the Red Storm to three consecutive BIG EAST Championships. The Johnnies won the BIG EAST Title and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016 in his first season in Queens.
Georgetown enters the weekend 7-5, and 2-1 in conference play. The Hoyas notched wins against Marquette and Butler in its first three matches of league play. Georgetown dropped to Creighton, 5-2 in Omaha to end February. The Hoyas have played two matches since February 25th, and have not played since March 8th against Butler.
The Red Storm lead the all-time series with the Hoyas, 9-3. Last spring the Johnnies earned a 4-3 victory in Washington D.C., the first time the two programs had met since the 2017 BIG EAST Championship match.
Brown has won its last three matches to propel themselves to a 12-7 record on the season. Throughout the year, the Bears have been very strong at home boasting a perfect 8-0 record. Niraj Komantineni leads Brown in singles play with a 14-1 overall record between both the top and second slots. In doubles play, Alex Finkelstein and Noah Hernandez have steamed up for a team-best 10 wins.
The Red Storm is meeting Brown for the ninth time in the two programs' history, with the Bears victorious in six of the eight. Brown has won the previous three contests, including a 4-0 sweep in the last meeting in 2019.
St. John's will be busy next week with a trio of matches. The Johnnies will start the week hosting Villanova on Wednesday. Over the weekend, the Red Storm will travel to Yale on Friday before hosting St. Francis Brooklyn on Sunday.
