Bobby Seel and Brian Kelly led the Red Storm with four points apiece
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's lacrosse team fell in a hard-fought battle to RV/RV Richmond, 11-8, on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Queens.
The Red Storm led, 6-2, at halftime but were unable to fend off the Spiders in the second half scoring surge at DaSilva Memorial Field
Bobby Seel had a banner day with his first career hat-trick, the sophomore added one helper to finish with an all-time best four points against the Spiders.
Brian Kelly recorded a hat-trick and chipped in one assist, marking the fourth time in his career the talented sophomore has registered four points or more. The Red Hook, N.Y., native fired off 15 shots, the most by any Red Storm player this season.
Jack Lutfi and Gavin Legg each contributed a goal in the opening half. Lutfi tallied a single assist along with Jake Wright, who swung a pass to Seel in the second quarter for the first point of the freshman's collegiate career.
In his first appearance of the 2023 season, junior faceoff specialist Jake Oemcke returned from injury and went 7-of-11 from the "X" and scooped a team-high five groundballs.
Another strong game for netminder Kyle Munson, who concluded the contest with 13 saves, highlighted by 11 in the opening 30 minutes. The senior is averaging 14.5 saves over his last two appearances in the cage.
In the opening quarter, Lutfi started off the scoring with a close-range rip off a behind-the-net feed from Kelly.
In the final minute of the first, drifting away from the cage, Kelly rifled one into the top corner to tally his 40thcareer goal in just 23 appearances. The highlight-reel goal gave the Red Storm a 2-1 advantage after the opening quarter.
Early in the second frame, Bobby Seel tucked on in the bottom corner to nudge back in front, 3-2. The Johnnies that continued to stay hot scoring four-straight, Legg took a long pass from Munson straight down the middle and the long-pole sent a rocket into the twine. With 43 seconds left in the first half, Seel received a pass across from Jake Wright and got one off as he tumbled to the turf that bounced in to make it, 6-2, heading into the locker room.
In the third stanza, Richmond charged right back into the game, scoring five of the game's next six goals to knot the score at 7-7. It was Seel that took it himself and buried one in miraculous fashion once again to move back ahead, 8-7. On the man-up, the Spiders' Lance Maddonna put one past Munson to even the score 8-8 at the end of the third quarter.
In the final period with the game all square, Richmond outscored the Red Storm 3-0 in the final frame to clinch a road victory.
After today's non-conference finale, the Johnnies will look forward to conference play as they face No. 7/7 Villanova in the BIG EAST opener on April 1 at noon.
